Just spent a night here with a group - felt like an office block, we were all on different floors so meant alot of walking up and down stairs. Only one oven working in the kitchen - hopeless when there were so many people trying to cook. Not enough cutlery in the draws and just enough plates - if you... More

Counter staff were not very attentive or polite. Price was reasonable. Rooms were clean but felt very much like a converted office block. Bunk rooms were decent size. Beds were okay. Foyer was eclectic and messy. Common room had broken furniture but had a few comfy couches. Cafe downstairs was great! Food and coffee was delicious! Would definitely go back... More

Stayed for one night on our way to Queenstown from Dunedin. The room was a bit dirty, one of the curtains was lying on the floor when we checked in. The place seemed deserted. The Tv room had no TV! The staff were ok except for whoever was working in the cafe on the groundfloor that decided to blast the... More

Stayed here for 1 night while passing through Invercargill. Was an OK hostel overall. Very clean and well located and with free WiFi, but the staff were pretty miserable, the room was tiny, the kitchen was spartan and had no mugs, and the WiFi was fairly slow. If you are just staying 1 night then its a good option, but... More

I stayed at Tuatara for a couple of nights in both a dorm room and double en-suite. The rooms are spacious (they have resisted the urge to squeeze as many bunk beds as possible into a space) and comfortable and warmer than your average backpackers. The cooking and chill out areas are also large and the laundry clean. Two things... More

This place was a very central backpackers, really nice cafe downstairs which did amazing food. The hostel itself was clean and tidy, if a little on the old-fashioned side. I liked the kitchen area which was well equipped and had plenty of little tables to sit at and eat. There is a mini TV room which is nice. The rooms... More

Rooms were decent, metal bunk beds weren't sloppy and wobbly. Bathrooms are in need of a major overhaul. Free WiFi, albeit slow. Discount at the cafe in the lobby which serves a excellent breakfast. Great location

Very happy with my room in this backpacker hostel; clean and tidy; front office staff were friendly and the cafe was fine (good coffee and a variety of snacks/meals on sale - and guests get a discount). A visiting group of school kids made for a noisy night until midnight but I guess that can happen anywhere. I had a... More

We stayed here one night after a tramping trip. The rooms were basic and run down, some had TV's & other didn't but the same price. Very noisy, especially if your room is near the lifts- we had a large group of young tennis players who ran around all night & started again at 6 am! The cafe was OK... More

Tuatara Lodge is on the Main Street, across from the cinemas. The entrance/reception area is appealing as this is the home of a relatively good cafe, however the rooms are old, outdated and shabby. We had a double room that had no window and very old decor and amenities. There is free wifi. We wouldn't stay here again!
