Bushy Point Fernbirds was our favorite stay during three weeks of exploring the best of the South Island. Full disclosure, we like to get a bit off the beaten path, especially in tourism-heavy countries like New Zealand. At Bushy Point, we felt that we had found a hidden gem as soon as we reached the end of the gravel road... More

My husband and I stayed for two nights in January with Ian and Jenny. We were both suffering from colds and Jenny was just like a Mum to us both doing all she could to make us feel better! Ian gave us a fascinating tour of the reserve and taught us lots about the flora and fauna which we found... More

Our stay here was one of the most memorable experiences during our NZ trip. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by Jenny and given a few good dinner recommendations in town. The room itself was very comfortable and stylish, with a huge bed, very comfy bedding, and a pile of bird books! The room we stayed in had big... More

On a five week visit to New Zealand we stayed at Fernbirds on our second night. We received a wonderful warm welcome from Ian and Jenny, and sat drinking a cup of tea watching Tui and Bell birds out of the kitchen window! What a start ... then we settled into a beautiful room with balcony then a walk around... More

The place was beautiful and the rooms were comfortably done up. With the New Zealand bush at their backyard, it was a beautiful sanctuary for the birds. So much care goes into preserving the natural habitat! The biggest regret that we had (and a lot of other reviewers, I realised) was spending only one night at the location. But what... More

On a five week trip of the SI we made great efforts to stay in special places to encounter NZ birds - this place just blew us away and to our great disappointment we only had one night there. Our hosts were amazing and went to great lengths to help us see the fern bird being exceptionally generous with their... More

My hosts offered me a free pick up at the airport and from that moment I was treated more as a friend than a guest. Their very attractive homestay is a sensitively extended traditional building standing within extensive grounds of restored New Zealand Bush. Bedrooms, lounge and dining area are comfortable and offer great views of Bellbirds and Tuis attracted... More

Jenny and Ian were gracious and generous hosts to me and my husband for our one night stay at their gorgeous house on our recent NZ vacation. Although we stayed just one night, we were treated as friends by our wonderful hosts. The home and our room were lovely. Breakfast was quite nice and with a view of the backyard... More

This was one of my favourite experiences during my year long stay in New Zealand. Jenny, Ian and I got on so well and I was so sad to only be able to stay one night with them! The bird experience was something I will never forget and can't even put into words how amazing it was! The bed was,... More

This place has it all, great B&B accommodation, friendly hosts who still enjoy what they do. The best is, for serious birders wanting to see the elusive fern bird, it is an easy board walk through the wetlands. Jenny has locating them down pat, forget the normal rules of birding, talk, make noise with your feet and whistle and take... More
