This is one of those old hotels that have been tarted-up. Sometimes they get it right, in this case not. The hotel incorporates a sleezy casino which is little more than a poker machine hall full of the usual desparate types. We found the staff at best stand-offish, some we just plain rude. It's in the centre of town, which... more

A friend and I stayed here for 1 night as we were travelling round the South Island in a campervan and it was my birthday so decided to splash out a bit. Lovely hotel, clean fresh and modern. The staff were friendly and helpful upon arrival with a porter ready to take our bags. We went for a Superior Room... more

I enjoyed this hotel - great location and very nice refurbished room. Smallish bathroom. Perhaps the most comfortable hotel bed I have slept in. Minor quible - the hotel restaurant (Carlton I think) has an a la carte breakfast menu but it is not offered, you have to request it. Otherwise they flog the typical over-proced buffets to you (off... more

The Southern Cross is the grand old lady of Dunedin. For years, she really was showing her age. Now the management have begun modernising the rooms, this is back on my list of hotels to stay at. I can't speak about the food as I always dine out when in Dunedin (even for breakfast) in one of the excellent cafes... more

The refurbished part of this hotel is lovely. The rooms have little view but it is inner city so this is usually the case. Rooms are not overly large but modern with lcd tvs etc. The bistro downstairs was great for light meals, I could sit by the fire and have a wine and didn't feel it was a problem... more

Stayed there for one night. What I liked about it: (1) A couple of blocks from the Octagon. (2) Nice, clean, spacious, quiet room with all the comforts and amenities you would expect from a hotel room (e.g. bar fridge, kettle, pay tv, iron, hairdryer, complimentary toiletries, comfortable beds, clean linen and towels). Downside: (1) Not much of a view... more

Just back from a great holiday in nz, but the trip was spoilt by this hotel. Booked and paid for this hotel in july of 2007 on the hotels website. When I booked the room the website stated that they had smoking rooms and I booked and paid under this understanding. On checking in was told they no longer had smoking rooms,was... more

Location 2 blocks from the Octagon and rooms nice. Newly refurbished but walls so thin you could spit through them. No chance of a sleep in without hearing 'your turn for a shower', 'do u want a coffee' etc. Staff extremely friendly though more

We had 3 nights here and were delighted with our very large comfortable room. It had a bathroom with facilities for disabled which I needed, and lovely thick towels and attractive toiletries. It was a corner room and we were happy with the outlook across to a small square, and were not troubled by traffic noise though there was an... more

We stayed for one night for a business meeting - which the Hotel did well in its very nice Heritage Room. However, this Hotel seems to be an amalgam of several buildings, in which the rooms are of variable quality and facilities. I was in the "Exchange" wing - which I would gladly have exchanged for another. Although the view... more
