My husband and I decided to book in for 2 nights at the end of a long driving holiday of New Zealand. As we had stayed at YHA hostels for the whole trip I expected the standards to be higher. We chose this one as they advertise they have on-site parking however we were told that we could not park... more
I got to the Christchurch YHA expecting the normal high standards, having stayed in YHA hostels all over New Zealand. I was checked in by a member of staff who seemed to be more interested in eating his dinner than answering my questions. Reception was big but not warm/friendly. When I got to my room it was dark, pokey and... more
Small room for a 4 bed dorm but clean with comfy beds and a heater which did heat the room albeit slowly. Bathrooms were clean and well maintained. Two large kitchens but on separate floors, with all the necessary equipment, however, you often found that people would take the pots and pans etc to the other kitchen and thus leaving... more
Clean, spacious, very friendly competent reception staff, we found it was perfect for some quiet time after some serious late nights in Sydney! Without a doubt THE nicest double bed we had slept in on our travels. Nice air of relaxation. Go for it, you wont regret it :) more
I stayed in YHA Christchurch a few times during my 2 week tour of South Island. Rooms are clean and the bathroom and kitchen are spacious. The Front Office desk are helpful but you will probably find them really busy checking in guests etc. On the negative side, my groceries were twice stolen from the pantry. Someone took my chocolates... more
The more I travel around OZ & NZ the more I realise the only hostels worth staying in are the YHA's as they are consistently clean, well-priced, in good locations and most importantly quiet! The CC YHA was fantastic - really nice people on reception that were very helpful. Theres super-fast internet with Skype, 2 kitchens (complete with a communcal... more
I am traveling by myself and was refered to the YHA Christchurch.Apon arrival I was quoted $25 dollars for a share room;I mentioned that Ihad been refered. The lady in reception said it was possible to have my own room in the old part of the hostel at no extra cost, all the linen and bedding was included. There was a view of... more
The rooms were small and not particularly cozy, but nothing less than you expect for a cheap price at a hostel. The kitchen was big, well-equipped and clean. The showers and toilets were also okay. Friendly staff that can help you with everything. Great location, and just 5 min from Cathedral Square. Too bad you had to walk a little... more
Overall nice place in good location. Check-ins are their first priority. Remember the NZ accent: E's are pronounced like I's and I's are pronounced like U's! So when the receptionist asks you if you are "new chickens" then say yes, because she means "new check-ins"! Rooms a bit small and get stuffy quickly & very basic, just a bed, mirror,... more
