Yes the hotel is renovating -- there is no clearly marked entrance. It is hard to find. You need to figure out that you enter through a restaurant, and handle all luggage yourself, oh, and park your car yourself. Then the rooms...yes, they have been renovated, but the hotel has an endemic problem...the elevators can be heard throughout the floors.... more

I wish I'd known the hotel was renovating, since staying in hotels during construction time is always going to affect the guests in some way, and I don't feel it's fair to the hotel to rate it based on that, but that's all I have to go on. We were looking for a comfortable base from which to explore Christchurch and the Rydges did not disappoint. The rate was fairly competitive for a good sized room that was well presented with a large, really comfortable bed. The location was convenient for the main central tourist activities. We stayed at the Rydges for three nights in August. The rooms were nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. Breakfast (Buffet-style) was well stocked and a good start to the day. It is centrally located, i.e. walking distance to the center. The concierge on hand was very helpful and gave us some great tips. I would definitely stay there again. more

Very happy with everything during our stay. Hot food in the breakfast bar was a little ordinary but edible. Great location, only a short walk to sights & square. Nice rooms. Would stay here again. more
