My daughter lives in Sumner, not far from governors bay. We called into this beautiful old hotel for lunch!! The hotel has such a wonderful relaxing feel about it!! The seafood chowder was TDF (to die for) & at $15, was great value!! The stunning views up Lyttleton harbour, the beautiful grounds which are bathed in sunlight, and the wonderful... More

Outside of Christchurch New Zealand at Governor's Bay is the older Historic Hotel. Stunning views of the bay, short walk to water and the bay itself. Great meals, enjoyed the pub located in hotel. Small room I stayed in had balcony looking down to bay. Shared clean bathroom facilities were no problem. I do always travel with Clorox wipes and... More

Dear Jeepngal, So glad you enjoyed your night away with us and thank you for your feedback. Those Clorex wipes come in very handy on trains in Vietnam I can tell you but I'd like to think our standard of cleanliness is somewhat superior to that. All the best, hopefully we'll see you again sometime and in the meantime, happy... More

Took a drive over the hill this morning to see how our daughter's new house in Cass bay was coming along. She said to meet her at the Governers bay Hotel for lunch as it was such a cool place. We walked from the car park, up some steps and into a beautiful out door dining area with an amazing... More

Dear Ron, Many thanks for your comments and we're very glad you and your family enjoyed their lunch with us. We're really happy with our kitchen team this year and both them and our front of house staff are doing a terrific job so it's very pleasing that this was reflected in your meals. Hopefully see you again soon and... More

We stayed last minute at this pretty old hotel. Our room was a very small box with not even room for a nightstand to deposit your stuff (shared bathroom). That would have been not so terrible but my side of the bed was kind of slanted so I had a hard time sleeping. Oddly, my husband's side was fine, which... More

Dear PThomas, Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry you did not have a relaxing sleep with us. I must say our mattresses and beds are all less than two years old so I am perplexed by your dilemma. I have subsequently checked out your mattress and can find no fault. Glad you enjoyed the outlook and your... More

stayed one night here, very welcoming staff. Bags carried up stairs for us more aged, room clean, well decorated and overlooked the bay with access to a balcony. Again clean adequate shared bathroom and toilet (we knew that when we booked). Food delicious with seating outside, bar, off bar and restaurant. Breakfast adequate continental cereal (4?), fresh fruit, milk, juice,... More

Dear Lou, Glad to be of service particularly if you're over the hill, Christchurch, that is. Thank you for your comments and praise, we do aim to please. "Country Hotel", now that is a quandry, I'd like to think we are a cross between between country hospitality and city cosmopolitanish and given that we're only 20 minutes from Christchurch I... I stayed in room no. 1 at the Governors Bay Hotel for one night after a few days in Christchurch. From the moment that I contacted the hotel to make a booking, the staff were efficient and welcoming and friendly. There are two things that lift a hotel from good to great for me - a comfy bed and a... More

I enjoyed a lovely casual late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We sat in the sun and chatted and enjoyed pleasant background guitar player. The staff were so helpful, efficient and friendly. Dear Ann, You should be a travel writer! Next time you're over I would highly recommend Sir Miles Warren's gardens at Ohinetahi if you haven't visited there before. So glad you enjoyed your Sunday afternoon with us. We're really happy with our kictchen and front of house team and we're glad this reflected in your experience. Please do come again.... More

Stayed here on a trip around New Zealand. Can highly recommend BOTH the hotel and restaurant. We received a warm welcome at the hotel and the rooms and setting were lovely. Restaurant was also excellent. Governors bay is a lovely setting and I would recommend staying here over Christchurch itself. Overall can HIGHLY recommend BOTH the restaurant AND the hotel.... More

We chose this hotel after friends bragged about it. Totally lived up to the reviews. The view is so charming. So happy to have a balcony. Also close to Littleton which is fun to visit. Great staff and service.
