We arrived at Hoon Hay Valley Lodge shortly after the Christchurch quake. The B & B accommodation is quite separate from the house and had emerged unscathed. Ernst & Renate's house had suffered serious damage but despite the traumas they had endured they were the perfect hosts. They were so calm, efficient, helpful, always generous with their time and advice... More

This is a fantastic vacation retreat for those of you who do not want to stay in the core of the city. Ernst and Renate are super people who go out of their way to make your stay an enjoyable one. Althought our vacation was cut short because of the earthquake, I would book another vacation here in a hearbeat.... More

Renate and Ernst are wonderful hosts. They offer activity suggestions, maps, restaurant ideas and are very friendly. Their "service" is impeccable, breakfasts are flexible and varied. The garden and grounds are extensive and they have indoor and outdoor eating areas that are very modern. We stayed for two nights, toured for a week plus and came back again, departing from... More

We were greeted on arrival by Renate and Ernst ( who had to hobble to the door on crutches!). They were both very welcoming and throughout our 3 night stay always took the time to talk to us and see if we needed anything.Renate gave us a good map to explore, told us the best places to park and explore,and... Ernst and Renate are a hard working, lovely couple who did their best to make us feel welcome. The room we had was clean and comfortable and our stay at Hoonhay was brief but enjoyable. This is the only B&B I've been to where you get a menu for a cooked breakfast! I would definitely stay there again perhaps next... More

We stayed at Ernst and Renate's immaculate B&B during January with our two mid-teenagers in mid January. From the moment we arrived and asked for advice on itinerary and restaurants, our hosts proved second to none! With a large family of their own (now moved out - hence the availability of some rooms in a separate wing of the house... More

I was so glad we found Hoonhay - a much nicer alternative than staying in a hotel - and yet very close to the city. We just had a quick stay of two nights in the cottage, and it suited us perfectly. The cottage was great - very clean and comfortable with everything you could need. The location and surroundings... More

We were made to feel very welcome by the lovely hosts. The accommodation was above expectations and every minor detail had been thought through. We had a wonderfully relaxed time.

Ernst and Renate made our stay really special. The house for the guests is decorated with pine furnishings and terracota tiles , making the place feel rather alpine and quite spacious. The house is set in large grounds and guests are free to stroll round. The room we stayed in had a separate shower room and toilet . It felt... More

Wanted a place to stay in Christchurch but with a rural feel. This place was perfect. 20 mins from central CC and you feel miles away. The two bedroom cottage just in the long driveway was idea for us 3, and can accomodate a family of 4 very comfortably. Everything you want in a self-contained, self-catering place you will get...
