This thermal resort has not changed since I was a kid and it shows. It needs complete renovation. It has just been sold to some Australian/ New Zealanders so I hope they have this in their plans. The pools are quite nice - more natural than hanmer. However the faculties that come with them need to be replaced/ updated.

Arrived at reception to be greeted by a friendly staff member. Due to reading the vast range of reviews we requested to View a garden side room before we committed to booking. We seen room 3 it is a basic room with no modern amenities and although dated it was clean. However we made a conscious decision we were here... More

Stayed overnight. Check-in was a breeze. They have packages available that includes dinner and / or breakfast, hire of Kimonos and use of their private spa. Private Spa is well-worth a try (no sandflies here) The facilities are a bit dated though. The place probably needs a renovation sometime soon... Restaurant is definitely 5 star +! Lovely menu with both... More

Long drive from hammer springs to the pools. What a disappointment. Couldn't use the outside pools because of the sandflies, couldn't use the larger indoor pools because they are single sex (I was travelling with my kids - one of each sex and two young to send one by themselves into one of the pools), which left us with no... I was so excited to come here and get a taste of Japan again. We paid $249 for a twin package and then upgraded to a 'mountain view' room which mostly overlooked the car park and the bath house. Highly disappointed! The garden view rooms looked better. No tv either, hard to fill up time. Had to pay a ridiculous... More

I thought it was strange that this place was not listed on Booking.com, but what was even stranger was that after I booked an obviously vacant room, I received this response: "Your booking has NOT been confirmed yet, you will receive a response via e-mail within 72 hours". This is laughable. The day before check-in I received a call telling... More

I booked this as part of a birthday weekend surprise for a 40 something male. he has a inkling for Japan and this was the closest I could get him in the middle of the upper south island. I booked the Onsen package - Japanese room, private spa, pools, 3 course dinner and breakfast. We had done an overnight tramp... More

The showers were broken and could not be used, kitchen was shut, could not get access to massages, the carpet in the private spa had holes in it, the toilet didn't flush, the view was of a metal wire fence. Complete was of money. The place looks like 1950's Russia.

The rooms are a little disappointing at first, very basic but once you settle in, it's quite relaxing. The location is really good. The thermal springs are a must !! fantastic but watch the little black mites that bite you !!! That's almost everywhere in NZ anyway. The highlight for us for the evening meal - really nice, good portions... More
