Disgusting place... rooms, showers and kitchen are dirty. No toilet paper and kitchen equipment is rare. The man at the reception is grumpy and rude. This was the worst place i stayed in my life. They have free car parking, but it is usually full.

I read some reviews before we stayed here and as a backpackers, I don't particularly have high expectations of hostels, but for $24 a night, which i think is expensive for this hostel, it was disgusting. I have to admit the bedroom wasn't all bad, it was very small but the sheets seemed clean apart from a few stains. However,... More

stayed here in august 2013 not had time to do a review, staff bad, odd people, long terms on drugs, first night here we went out and found out the next day that the police was called out to someone who had an argument with his girlfriend and was walking around the hostel in his underwear with a knife, the... We booked this place as it was the cheapest private room we could get in Wellington. I guess we can't complain too much as it is budget accommodation. However, the cigarette smells, the way the foam mattress was on a lean, the dirty linen and carpet, and the soaking wet floor in the unisex shared bathrooms didn't overly impress us,... More

This place was terrible! We camped in their back garden and tbh I think we had the best "room". Very dirty and smelly. No cutlery in the kitchen. Staff were pretty useless couldn't even point us to the back garden and very non complacent. This place definitely appeared to be more of a halfway house than a hostel.

Pretty basic, slightly run-down backpackers, there are better options in Wellington although this one has more character than the big corporate style ones (Base/Nomads etc.) and probably avoids the worst/loudest type of backpacker that type of place seems to attract. Communal areas are light and airy but not huge. We weren’t here for long but didn’t come across any of... More

Whilst a lot of the reviews on here are quite 'strong', this certainly isn't a great hostel. The backpacker areas seem quite nice but we booked a double room and ended up in a very small room in corridor that stank of cigarettes and cooking smells. The residents around us were long term and families/migrants. All very friendly but it... More

We stayed at the lodge for one night. We were travelling by camper van so used this to sleep in but we were welcome to use all the facilities. There was a really big living area and kitchen and there were lots of bathrooms and showers on each floor. I liked my stay at Rowena's lodge.

I have stayed 2 nights at Rowena's! I was shocked when I arrived. The whole place stinks. Most of the single rooms are occupied by longterm residents/worker. They keep there working boots in the hallway and they smell very bad. Other than that the smoke smell was disgusting. Reception could not find my reservation, I rather would have left straight...
