Visited here recently, staff were pretty friendly, decor is a bit dated and the bar/lounge could really do with a makeover. Ultimately it's ok value and you get what you pay for. Good location also right across from the train station.

My name is Nick Westermeyer. I am a quadriplegic from a gymnastics injury sustained at Michigan State University in April 1991 who is interested in global travel and participating in activities not normally associated with disabled people. I’m currently on an adventure that will explore worldwide handicapped accessibility. Many people have travel blogs, but there are none that I know... More

This was our second visit to Downtown Backpackers/Waterloo Hotel. It was excellent from start to finish. We arrived too late to eat, and left before breakfast to catch a ferry, so can't comment on the cafe or kitchen. The room was clean, quiet and comfortable, and for the money outstanding. Check-in was friendly and efficient. We would definitely stay again.

We like the history of this building. A bit pricy but considering we are in th capital city, reasonable. We were in one of the already renovate rooms which was clean, nicely decorated and well-equipped. The kitchen was adequate and the dining area was fine as well. A close walk to downtown and RIGHT beside the ferry which we arrived... More

We have booked it the last minute and got a very nice double en suite bathroom room. It was clean and the bathroom was spacious. It is located near the harbor, therefore pretty handy if you arrive by ferry or taking the ferry to Picton. It is not the cheapest but well...

We originally booked for 3 nights but cancelled the last night after being here for a few hours. Partly because we felt we would have enough time in the city after 2 nights but had the hostel been nicer we probably would have just stayed the extra night anyway. It is directly opposite the train station so handy for getting... More

We have stayed here several times. We always get a room that has a view of a bit of the harbour, the ferry and the street, with ensuite. Our room was recently re-decorated, true heritage colours and a lovely art deco mirror and good bed. We had a triple room with double and single bed, plenty of room for the... More

Its a hotel that has been converted into a backpackers and is awesome. We stayed in a double room and it came with an en-suite automatically. There were stairs and an elevator which was brilliant for heavy suitcases and then use the stairs and elevators make me sick. The kitchen was very well stocked, it could get very crowded at... More

First of all, every hostel should have power outlets for all the guests in the room. This hostel only had 2 in our room for 6 persons. Our room had own bathroom with toilet+shower which was ok. Desk in the room was filthy on arrival, had to go down to reeption to get someone to wipe it clean. The hostel... More

We got what we paid for and had two good nights sleep in a clean room. The staff were friendly and helpful. I do think the website does make it look a lot more flash than it is though so we were a bit disappointed when we got there but it was cheap so no complaints really. It's about a... More
