They just switched management and the new manager is funny and helpful. Situated right next to a huge rockwall, my girlfriend and I enjoyed our stay very much. Our room was clean with a heater provided. Kitchen well stocked with kitchenware and some stuff people left over (oil, salt, pepper). Good idea to bring your own oil anyway. Walking distance... More

This hostel receives very good reviews. I share certainly many positive opinions on it, however there are some issues I found very disappointing Cons - The 6 bed dorm was stuffy - On check out day, we had a bus in the evening, so we planned to keep our luggage and wait 5 hours in the lobby. We were told... More

Bizarre indeed this review and it needs correcting! These are the facts: I am the new owner of this hostel business and I live here about 6 months - my name is John. The reception closes between 10 - 11pm (22 - 2300hrs) every night. The internet system we use here is the same as the i - sites around... More

We stayed here for 3 nights in a private room so we were nearby for the Tongariro Crossing and enjoyed our stay. The lady who checked us in was very friendly and went through so many options of what else we could do in the surrounding area and showed us maps etc. We were also lucky enough to be able... More

Extreme Backpackers was by far one of the best backpackers that we stayed in while we were in NZ. My biggest issue with hostels/backpackers is the cleanliness; the bathrooms at this place were SO clean, it made me so much more comfortable than some of the other hostels we stayed in. In addition to the cleanliness, the staff were so... More

Stayed here the night before embarking on part of the Tongariro circuit (the part we missed last year thanks to the eruption - Desert hwy past Waihohonu hut, which is brilliant, staying at Oturere hut then past Ketetahi hut - that took some hits in the eruption - to the road. Terrible weather but great to finish the walk at... More

This place came recommended by NZ Rough Guides book we were using as reference. My wife and I stayed here for 3 days with the intention to do the Tangariro Alpine Crossing. Being aptly named 'Extreme Backpackers', this place is nothing like the dingy and dodgy backpacker places everyone is familiar with. Instead, you get an extremely warm welcome from... More

Extreme Backpacker - Really? I was slightly concerned as we pulled up as I cant really say I would live up to that title, but I soon relaxed once inside. Myself and my partner stayed here for 2 nights in a double room with shared bathroom. The room was a tad on the small side but it was fine for... More

I stayed in this hostel for 4 days recently whilst exploring the Tongariro National Park and had a great time. The hosts were so fun and welcoming and went out of their way to help me. I was there for a few days whilst waiting to do the Tongariro Crossing and there was loads to do - bike rides, hot... More

The name 'Extreme Backpackers' may give you the impression of rowdy, thrill-seeking types, dingy bunkbeds and crowded common rooms... but really it was quite the opposite. Our experience was really pleasant and the perfect place to lay our heads after a day at Whakapapa. Our double room was tidy and warm, the shared kitchen was immaculate extremely well equipped. The... More

Stayed here for a night before doing the Tongariro alpine crossing. Turned up early evening without a booking, was no trouble to get a twin room and book two of us onto the shuttle bus to the start of the crossing. Very informative, helpful owner/manager. Very clean rooms, great kitchen, clean bathrooms.
