Stopping in Taupo was a last minute, just stopping through, kind of experience for us. The reason it was so wonderful was because of Blackcurrant! Best sleep. Nicest staff. So close to everything.. Pak N Save is a 3 minute walk! The hostel was converted from a motel - it still has the nice beds and feels like a hotel!... More

Bad: was assigned a bed by the door so had to deal with all the noise, cold and awkwardness that comes with that position. Staff not very friendly or helpful. Kitchen stove buttons for the gas has fallen apart and was unable to start the stove. Good: Close to supermarket and shops. One bed (no bunks) in a spacious room.

I love this place. It's amazing value for money. How do they do it? Each room has just a few beds (REAL beds - no foam chunks, no bunks) and an ensuite bathroom. For under $30! The kitchen is tidy, the layout is nice, the location is a short walk from town, the staff are friendly, and everything's clean and... More

I stayed for three nights in this hostel and had a great experience, the location was very good, the garden and picnic tables were spot on and the rooms where big and tidy, as was the bathroom (excellent shower!). The kitchen and dining room were also really nice, and the owner was helpful and always trying to make you feel... More

Excellent 2 nights here as part of my recent 16 day Haka Tour. Lovely setting with outdoor and indoor communal areas. We enjoyed a lovely meal watching a beautiful sunset over the lake and mountains. We were made to feel very welcome, the rooms were good (mine was huge!!). Also well located for some local shops, a bit more of... More

I contacted this hostel to book in a room and was asked all the normal questions about what room we wanted, when, etc. Eventually the woman asked where I lived and I said Wellington, to which she replied to she would not accept bookings from New Zealanders. I told her that I was a British Citizen, to which she still... More

I lucked out here and ended up in a double bed in a four person room all to myself complete with en-suite bathroom. Regardless of this, it's a great place to stay. Clean, comfortable, good kitchen and I had a fridge in the room which I used as the kitchen ones were quite full. Would be nice to have some... More

Blackcurrant is a very nice hostel to stay ! The owner is a great person and very helpful. When i was there he told me to come for sailing but as it was my end of travel in NZ and i was saving money to do Tongariro crossing, i told him i couldn't afford it, well he said "you come... More

From the very beginning, I had a great stay at the Blackcurrant Backpackers. David, the manager, is a great, very friendly and helpful person. He made me feel welcome and at home right away. I spent two nights in the girls' dorm, which is very spacious, with two separate rooms, and offering comfortable single beds (no bunks). The bathroom is... More
