This place was really relaxed. We stayed there only for a night, on the way from Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland to Matamata, Hobbiton. Basic amenities, kitchen to prepare food and hot showers. Cute garden, lot of green plants around and a mini spa - which we haven't used. The town itself has a lakeview to offer and a local cinema if... More

Such a great backpackers to spend the Xmas and New Year period. I arrived and spent a month at this hostel during which time I found the hostel very clean, great facilities and the staff were very helpful. It's not a party hostel but very homely and a place just big enough that you can get to know other people... More

Excelent use of spa hot tub, cool feature. Great staff and loads of info and help. Rooms were good and well apointed, but the twins were a touch warm in the heat. Good kitchen spaces and nice terrace garden and lounge

Due to reviews we booked one night in a double room. The room looked quite pretty yet super small. Compfy bed and very clean. However no way to cool it down, air got stuffy and the bedroom was a sauna when we came home at night despite us having the window open. The rest of the place is a bit... More

This is my kind of room and it wouldn't be everyone's. Prison cell sized, with older-style furnishings. I love it. I met so many people here I will meet up with later around NZ, including staff. I love that Akira has been there for 10 years - I think that really says something about the hostel. I love the cat,... More

Spent two nights in a budget double room. Room was basic with really old decor and very small but it was very clean with a good bed (bit firm) and nice thick duvet and blanket. Can't complain for the price. The overall place was really cool, very old building but had a lot of character which gives it the 'shabby... More

Super chill place. There's original art on every wall, plenty of comfy places to hang out and meet people, the location is great, and the prices are very reasonable. The kitchens are small and can be a bit crowded, but since there's two it isn't much of a problem. The staff were friendly and very accommodating. I ended up staying... More

Friendly staff, nice and large rooms, two kitchens - well equipped , not so busy, relaxed, free hot spa, chilling area, care about recycling. Want to stay in Rotorua far away from a party hostel, go to the spa lodge! :)

I've had such a wonderful stay in this beautiful, little hostel with such friendly staff. Everything is tidy and well-organized (e.g. furniture). The spa is very cool and nice to have. Not a soulless hostel which doesn't care about the guests and their needs but a hostel that makes you feel like home. Definitely recommend it to everyone staying in... More

Yep. Spa Lodge is number one in my book. Each time I go to NZ I nearly always make sure I take in some MTBing in Redwoods, and consequently stay at Spa Lodge. It's become like "going home". I've stayed many places in many countries and have yet t come across better hosts. That it is an older place does... More
