Stayed in an 8 bed dorm. Enough room for everyone to put their things but seemed small when everyone was in there. Bathroom in room. Very dated décor, in need of an update. Bed squeaked every time you moved - someone could easily tighten the bolts ?! Bar did some good drinks deals. Quiz was good fun. Check out the... More

Our room was comfortable and clean, staff were very friendly and helpful. The only down side was how incredibly noisy it was later in the evening. The Pipi Patch bar is on site and that brings in a lot of rowdy people. I'm young and like a good time but I also like my sleep.

Stayed in a 8 bed dorm for 2 nights as part of a Stray tour group. Some rooms have 4 bunks in 1 room while mine had 2 rooms with a separate bathroom (shower & toilet). There are plenty of people checking in & out on different days so access in the morning isn't too bad (its a 7.15am departure... More

Stayed here two nights while in and around Paihia. Positives: -The location is great as its near the beach and close to the shops. -Polly was delightful, making bacon sandwiches at 7am with a smile on her face. -The evening BBQ is a cheap & cheerful option which works very well if you dont feel like going too far. Negatives:... More

The hostel is located in walking distance to the beach, it's not a far way to town center but quite a walk to the next supermarket; all in all the hostel is really clean, the kitchen was quite small and not much space to store stuff, but the dorm rooms are also equipped with a fridge! the rooms are clean... This Base Bay of Islands hostel is basically a party hostel. After a certain time at night you have to go through the bar for late check-in, etc. However, if you are looking to party, this is a great place to stay. It is on the street with the most bars and restaurants that are open late. There are a... More

It is close to the sea-front but itself has no views. The accommodation is shabby and dirty and even in my private room this was the case - I hate to imagine what the large dorms look like. On arrival I had to pay a $20 key deposit and pay for WIFI.

Are you a glutton for punishment? Looking to sleep in sheets that are likely 10 yrs old? Big fan of bugs? Stay here! While I understand that the price is good, there are MUCH cleaner, more updated hostels. I stayed in an individual room with shared spaces but also checked out the main kitchen. Both were basic as! Not only... More

Not perfect, not as clean as you wish, not quiet at night (Kiwi experience bus) but cheap, well located and friendly staff. If you don't find another one, go there, by some ear butts and don't go to sleep before midnight

Well, I only spent 1 night here before checking out and moving to a hostel over the road. I was in an 8 bed dorm - this was fine. Quite big, ensuite bathroom and there was a kettle and fridge available in the room which was good. However...the kitchen was a disaster. It was way too small for the amount... More
