As previous reviewers have said, this is a basic, cramped hostel that can get very noisy due to the proximity of the rooms to the bar. The tiny bathrooms in the 8 bed dorms are a particular issue; there's nowhere to put clothing and towels so they don't get soaked, and having the toilet and shower in the same unit... More

We stayed here for 3 nights and were all disappointed with the stay. The hostel is very basic and cramped. There's 8 beds to a (fairly small) room and only 1 bathroom between 8 people which can be a real nightmare in the mornings. The beds are so noisy and very unstable and the duvets are dirty too! There's nowhere... More

Paihia and the Bay of Islands are stunning! However, we were disappointed with the standard of accommodation we received here for the value we paid. Firstly, do not believe the hype about the pool facility as it is the size of a paddling pool and was dirty when we visited. There is quite a cramped communal space with a small... More

This hostel is in such a nice place & staff are really nice here also hot tub is amazing & good choice of movies to watch when chilling. Loved staying here & would definately go back. Rooms were en suite with a toilet/shower however there are no extra communal showers & unfortunately we were sharing with people who spent 30mins... More

Although I do not like Base as a chain, this hostel was very pleasant. The dorm room was clean ans the bathroom was nice, hot showers! The kitchen was clean ans pleasant - not overcrowded. And the bar was good with $5 beer and wine and an alright bbq meal. The staff were really friendly. Not a bad hostel, but... More

This is one of the better hostels I have stayed in so far. The staff are friendly and very helpful, the rooms are clean with en suite bathrooms, there is a hot tub, BBQ every night, relatively cheap bar with activities on most nights and an extremely friendly atmosphere. It's very easy to meet lots of different people in this... More

PROs: + Room 23 (an 8-person dorm) had an ensuite bathroom and mini-kitchen with a small fridge NEUTRAL: ~ bunk beds are the typical metal frames that creak when either person moves in the slightest, not to mention when they get in or out of bed CONs: - No soap in dispenser in bathroom - food labels are kept at... Very friendly staff and very helpful, lots of fun, rooms are clean and beds comfortable, just a great place to stay. Located very close to the beach and just a short walk to central Paihia for shops, other cafés and activities. Thank you for a great time.

Had a fantastic stay in this hostel as originally I thought it was a great safe place in New Zealand. I stayed here for 6 nights. Lots of visitor attractions in the area. Met lots of nice people including the staff. Unfortunately I packed my bag to go home and I found my bracelet was missing from my belongings in... More

Had a great time in Paihia Base - hostel is located right by the beach and a short walk from the ferry port to Russell/bus stops. Staff behind reception were lovely and attentive, and like most hostels in NZ, rooms are cheap. Unlike other Base hostels it is clean, not dusty, and actually lets light in. The bar puts on... More
