I had hoped for high standards, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a good Hostel to choose if you want a clean, homely place to stay, and then get a good nights sleep. The place is brilliantly run, all the things that can be irritating about staying in a hostel are attended to e.g. The showers are great, the bunk beds... More

This hostel is extremely clean, homely and cosy! However... It is very strict (which to be fair is probably why it's so clean!) I got told off a few times for various reasons (backpack was left on the floor and not in a locker etc etc!) so it's nice... But not much fun and a bit scary! Maybe good for... More

When I arrived to Mousetrap I was only booked in for a couple of nights and ended up staying for 4 months!! I have stayed at many hostels in Paihia but Mousetrap is simply the best and I would recommend it to anyone. It is nice and clean and Nikki and Jake, the owners, are absolutely great and really look... More

We came for the weekend of the 14th of February with two of my friends from Auckland, the place is clean, the owner such a nice guy and we had a lovely stay, the backpacker is one of the best I've never done for the ambiance and furnitures, I love the garden where you can seat and relax after long... We really enjoyed staying here. The owners are great, with good recommendations of where to go and what to see. The facilities are good (several small kitchens rather than one big one, reasonable bathroom) and the lounges and garden areas are comfortable. The double bedroom we had was quite small, but spotlessly clean (like the rest of the hostel) and... More

We had a lovely stay at a hostel type setting with lots of international students, we were the oldest by far but never felt self conscious!! Clare was our host after Fred left for South Sudan (yes, a Frenchman heading to doctors without borders). The star though is Jake. A couple nights later we thought we had left our passports... More

I stayed here for four days after staying in another hostel in Paihia which was awful. I walked in to Mousetrap and was so happy. Jake and Nikki are really hands on with the place and it shows. It's spotlessly clean with tea towels, cloths, shower mats etc all being replaced frequently. The four bed dorm I had was spacious... More

We stayed here for two nights in late December. The welcome was fine and we were pleased with the size of our double room. It is a backpackers accomodation so the bathroom facilities are shared. Everything was clean and there were plenty of plates/utensils in the kitchen. For the size of the place, there aren't very many toilets/showers, so if... More

Stayed here a year ago and booked it again for another stay in the Bay of Islands. As lovely and comfortable as I remember it. Lovely views of the sea form the lounges/verandah; convenient location; clean; friendly staff who are very welcoming; lovely atmosphere.

Easy walking distance to downtown. Friendly owner though felt like a lot of rules. I was in a shared room with 2 bunk beds which was clean along with the shared bathrooms. Only downside is the noise from the hostel across the street.
