My husband and I have been travelling for ten months and I was overwhelmed by the warmth and kindness showed to us by Rose and her family, who happened to be staying over the new year break. The Pickled Parrot is a lovely, friendly place to stay and we have stayed in a lot of hostels! A lovely quiet spot... More

For the first hostel I've ever stayed in, this really put me off the entire idea! The phone is never answered and the staff is rarely (if ever) around the office/property to speak to. Staff members were also very rude when they were around for about 30 minutes in the morning to clean. The "free breakfast" is only one bland... More

We visited the backpacker as a family for two days and rented two cabins. Toilets regularly ran out of toilet paper, the kitchen was not clean and the promised free breakfast was cancelled without prior notice supposedly because the guests did not leave the kitchen in a clean condition. This backpacker was by far the worst we visited in New... More

This was a fabulous little gem we found. Jungle setting, superb laid back owner and staff, wonderful people... Not advertised on hostel websites so no kids and empty beer bottles kicking around everywhere. Just a lot of respectful, like minded, experienced travellers. Had a wonderful time Thank you.

I cannot recommend this hostel highly enough!! The Pickled Parrot is literally the ideal place to kick back and relax; and you will struggle to find a more picturesque and idyllic location than The Bay of Islands to unwind and take zillions of stunning photos! The vibe in the hostel is super-chilled, friendly and welcoming; everyone throughout my 4 night... More

Great place, great location. The hostel is clean and the rooms are quite big and functional (best rooms we had in NZ.) The kitchen was great, well stocked but quite small but somehow works. It is always full but its okay and the vibe is great. There is a free breakfast but that is if the kitchen is clean, unfortunately... More

This place could have been perfect if not for the bugs. I slept in the dorm and the beds were comfortable and clean. Though no side lights which is always annoying. But I stayed here 3 nights and had great sleep all 3 nights. The hostel in general is a very quiet but also has a great social atmosphere. Met... More

After sleeping in a car for a few nights, this place was like a palace! The staff was so friendly and the facilities were amazing. Sure the kitchen was a little on the small side, but it got the job done. The toilets and showers are all BRAND NEW, and they're all individual bathrooms (as in you get your own... More

My girlfriend and I stayed here in Feb 2013 for 3 nights. The place is located a 5 min walk from central Paihia, and has a really nice outdoor feel to it, with the rooms around a courtyard. Rose, the manager, gave us a warm welcome and we were able to check in as soon as we arrived. The room... More

We arrived with our baby daughter and were instantly told off for not having told them that she would be coming too (we actually had sent them an email about it). It shouldn't have mattered anyway as we didnt ask for anything else- we had brought our own travel cot, etc but we were made to feel really unwelcome. The... More
