Well hidden on the edge of Paihia lies the Pickled Parrot, a nice little hostel on the Bay of Islands. The whole interior is superb, the community room is big and connected to the kitchen. We didn't use the latter except for making some sandwiches but it all looked nice and tidy as well as fully equipped. Free WiFi and... More

I stayed a little longer than a week in the Pickled Parrot Backpackers and really enjoyed my time there. It is a very clean hostel with new bathrooms. They also have free Breakfast, free unlimited Wifi and free Bikes (very good ones, not like the other dangerous i saw in other hostels). The kitchen is really good equipped. The Backpackers... More

We booked the parrot under the assumption that there would be breakfast provided and a clean room included. We arrived late, the room and the bathrooms were full of spiders and the high ceilings had not been dusted in who knows how long. The double bed was extremely uncomfortable and sagged to the middle and the curtains did not block... More

This is a good base in Paihia, good facilities, clean and found that a twin room was excellent value for money. It's not a big hostel so be prepared to share communal space/wait for shower in the morning. We were a bit frustrated that breakfast isn't put out if the kitchen is left in a mess (we had just arrived... More

My husband and I have been travelling for ten months and I was overwhelmed by the warmth and kindness showed to us by Rose and her family, who happened to be staying over the new year break. The Pickled Parrot is a lovely, friendly place to stay and we have stayed in a lot of hostels! A lovely quiet spot... More

For the first hostel I've ever stayed in, this really put me off the entire idea! The phone is never answered and the staff is rarely (if ever) around the office/property to speak to. Staff members were also very rude when they were around for about 30 minutes in the morning to clean. The "free breakfast" is only one bland... More

We visited the backpacker as a family for two days and rented two cabins. Toilets regularly ran out of toilet paper, the kitchen was not clean and the promised free breakfast was cancelled without prior notice supposedly because the guests did not leave the kitchen in a clean condition. This backpacker was by far the worst we visited in New... More

This was a fabulous little gem we found. Jungle setting, superb laid back owner and staff, wonderful people... Not advertised on hostel websites so no kids and empty beer bottles kicking around everywhere. Just a lot of respectful, like minded, experienced travellers. Had a wonderful time Thank you.

I cannot recommend this hostel highly enough!! The Pickled Parrot is literally the ideal place to kick back and relax; and you will struggle to find a more picturesque and idyllic location than The Bay of Islands to unwind and take zillions of stunning photos! The vibe in the hostel is super-chilled, friendly and welcoming; everyone throughout my 4 night... More

Great place, great location. The hostel is clean and the rooms are quite big and functional (best rooms we had in NZ.) The kitchen was great, well stocked but quite small but somehow works. It is always full but its okay and the vibe is great. There is a free breakfast but that is if the kitchen is clean, unfortunately... More
