Whilst this property has been around awhile it has been maintained to a good standard and our room was freshly painted and comfortable. We had dinner in the restaurant which had a basic menu but the food was tasty and plenty of it. There is a nice walking track down through the bush covered cliff to the lovely Onepoto Bay.... More

Although our night at this hotel was probably the least enjoyable of our three weeks in New Zealand, some of this was down to personal preference rather than the hotel itself. The hotel owner and restaurant staff were very friendly, but in truth we felt that the restaurant prices were slightly too high for the level of food and service... More

Amazing view over the bay and really friendly staff Pros: - good views - restaurant on site - wifi (although can only use in dining area) - tidy room - tea making facilities in room - fridge in room - TV - towels provided - large room with a double and a single bed Things to know: - dated but... Yes a great location with fantastic views though not all the cabins have good views. The rooms are dated but more than adequate being clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and we had an enjoyable stay.

The motel is one of very few on the East Cape road and is in an amazing location looking out over the bay. The rooms are perfectly adequate for a short stop over and the restaurant is also good. Be aware that the restaurant is only open at set times 6-8 I think and there is nowhere else to eat!The... More

The motel is modest, with very clean rooms. The location is amazing. It sits on top of a bluff overlooking a beautiful bay. There is a path to walk (steeply) down to an amazing, sandy beach. They serve dinner in the restaurant. The food, like the place, was simple but very good. Don't miss the Glow Worm Grotto - it... More

We found Hicks Bay Motel a great place to stay. Situated on the hill surrounded by native trees with a great view of the bay,the country atmosphere took us away from the city life. We found the owners an awesome couple and their staff very friendly and helpful. Our unit was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed the cleanliness of... More

First impressions are of old buildings looking very dated. But they are well painted and maintained, and the bedding & furnishings were fresh and new looking. There is no balcony, but the view of the bay from the room is superb. The ensuite toilet and shower is very basic but clean and working OK. The evening meal and breakfast were... More

Despite its needing a complete rebuild, we loved it! Quirky, charming and dated, the place reminded us of an old British holiday camp - 'hi-di-hi'! We were doing a road trip along the North Island's Pacific Coast and Hicks Bay is one of very few stopping points between Whakatane and Gisborne, so the motel has a pretty captive market. We... 6th accommodation of 19. Lovely location with great views. We arrived just in time to eat in the restaurant. Good job as we hadn't seen anywhere else to eat. We had a lovely meal. The rooms are a little dated but they were clean. Didn't like the look of the shower, only there one night so chose not to use... More
