Good location, good price. Everything else is terrible. I wish we had researched more about it when we booked it. There was no lift and we had to lug our bags (20+ kg luggage + 10 kg backpack. Each.) three floors up. The only consolation was that the stairs were a little wide. The room is small and there was... More

This place looks like it has lots of character, and is in a great location, but it was really disappointing. The tavern is nice, and we enjoyed our beer, but were pretty disappointed after climbing 4 flights of stairs, to find that we were in the maids quarters. The dingy beige paint everywhere, the sloping ceilings (after I cracked my... More

We were looking for low to moderate price range and this place meet that expectation. It's a unique hotel and the hotel microbrewery in auckland. Nice bar and restaurant. Beer , drinks , and food average price. Salad, lamb burger, and lamb shank recommended. Hotel is average. Rooms are small with no aircon, but room 10 had 2 windows to... More

The Shakespeare has such a timely atmosphere, from the bar to the actual hotel section upstairs. The grand wooden and thick carpeted staircase is the only way to reach the bedrooms. We were on the top floor, so it was a bit of a climb. The bedroom itself was pretty small, but quaint. Bed was soft, bathroom acceptable. The staff... More

Stopped by here for lunch. Was lured in by the lunch offer of a kilo of NZ green lip mussells for $15. Sat outside, nice view, quite busy, good atmosphere. Promptly ordered my mussells and a pilsner that they brew in house. Very nice it was too but the glass mug wasn't very big. Enjoyed the mussells which were huge... More

I generally like to steer clear of the large hotel chains and support the little guy. On entering the Shakespeare appeared to be just the job. A boutique feel, a micro brewery and bar on the ground floor and a nice looking restaurant on the first. Obviously a bit of cash had been spent on the public areas. Unfortunately this... More

Stayed here for 1 night upon arriving in Auckland. Manager opened a bit early to help check us in, extremely friendly staff. Location was unbeatable - a short walk to the tower, to the main drag, and not too far from the waterfront. The bar downstairs was a nice touch - the best live music and great drinks (food was... Rooms have no air conditioning and if the windows are left open a sickening fatty fishy smell emanates from the kitchen exhaust situated just outside some bedrooms. Otherwise rooms were adequate. Ales were crafted well. The character of the hotel has been retained in the entrance hall and stairwell. No lifts so don't bring a heavy bag.

We had 3 nights here and it was without doubt the worst place we have stayed in. Right on the junction of Wyndham and Albert street, the traffic and street noise dictates how much sleep you may get. You don't here the pub music so that's a bonus. The rooms are tiny, nowhere to hang any cloths so they are... More

Visited Auckland overnight for the theatre, and was delighted with my stay in this characterful old building. Friendly relaxed service, and check-in at the bar; just like staying with a friend, only in the centre of Auckland! As others have noted, there is no lift, just a beautiful wide staircase to the rooms on three floors above and anything else... More
