The brown kiwi is a very welcoming little hostel in ponsonby, Auckland. It has a nice kitchen where everybody meets for breakfast and dinner. The livingroom was always crowded with people either watching tv or talking and hanging out. The outside area is very comfy and you can have a drink and maybe get a free avocado. The neighbourhood is... More

As soon as we arrived here we felt at home! We checked in at 9pm and the member of staff on duty was really helpful and super polite! There is a good size kitchen and lounge area where there are lots of friendly guests for you to chat to from all over the world! The whole hostel was spotlessly clean,... More

When we arrived, the manager was out but we were let in by some of the other guests. The hostel is very welcoming with a large kitchen and lounge full of books. We didn't stay in the main building but had a room in the next door flat that has four bedrooms and two bathrooms with washing machines. It is... More

We (my wife and I) spent two nights at the Brown Kiwi at the beginning of our NZ adventure. We hiked the 3 km from downtown upon arrival, but looking back we should have taken the bus which stops just a few minutes walk from the hostel door. It was also a big plus that we were able to check... More

I should preface this review by saying that this was our first hostel in New Zealand so we had no local frame of reference, and that we only stayed for one night. It's on a quiet street in Ponsonby, beds are comfy, showers are warm but the bathrooms are very small so there is a bit of a squeeze when... More

Hi we're really sorry you had a bad experience. As we are a small hostel we cannot be open 24 hours. Check in is 11am as it is at most hotels because we need time to check out guests and make up rooms. We have a night manager on until 10pm. However guests who arrive very early as you did... More

Auckland - Brown Kiwi Only a short walk away from SkyCity in Ponsonby but get the green or orange bus if you've got a lot of luggage to carry up the hill. Well located and surprisingly quiet for Auckland. The dorm room was comfy if a tad hot (what do you expect in December) but we just flung the window... More

I am so happy that I have stayed here with friendly hosts around. I feel like a sweet home meeting old friends for the first time. The experience is value for money, with convenience location, comfortable environment, nice dining area to meet friends and prepare meals, and comfortable room to exchange travelling experience with new friends. A sweet home that... More

My Wife and I stayed in the Brown Kiwi from 4 weeks in November & December 2013. The whole set up is to a very high standard and ideal for any backpacker or traveller looking for a cheap place to stay either short or long term. Hannes and the team are all extremely helpful and create a very homely environment.... More

I have been there for a couple of times. It's a lovely, tidy, small Backpackers in Auckland's most beautiful district. It always felt homelike, the stuff is super nice and helpful and takes care of everyone and everything! Super recommendable! I would always come back to the BK. Naomi

This hostel is extremely busy, always people coming and going but has a great atmosphere and really friendly. When we stayed they were very busy but have a emergency room which is called the hobbit room and its in the attic above the reception area. This has a double bed and a little table. You cannot stand up straight in... More
