I booked over nakedbus.com which gives you quite a big discount if you book a bit in advance. Both times I was there, I got a room without a window. It was okay for a night but not if you want to stay for longer. You could leave your luggage in a luggage room for several days, but you had... More

I booked into Sanctuary (women's only). I stayed the 1st time 11 years ago - it was a fabulous then. It's really gone downhill since then. Not good It is loud from the night club, the women communal area was right next door to my room. So I got it from both sides. The showers are dirty and tired looking.... More

Would recommend for its central location, but do expect noise as the walls are very thin you can practically hear people's conversation in the next room. Facilities and accommodation are basic, the kitchen needs improvement as it was extremely dirty and unhygienic when I stayed here.

As stated in the title, the location is convenient and most places are in walking distance. That being said, noise levels are high during Saturday nights. Rooms are old and toilets/showers need to be cleaned more frequently. I have visited cleaner backpackers which are more worth it. Wouldn't recommend staying for long-term

While staying at base I got ate up by some kind of bug during my sleep. I showed the bite marks to the receptionist. She told me they were flee bites and that she could not give me a refund because they were not bed bugs. Ridiculous it should not matter what kind of bug it is your establishment has... More

Stayed in a couple's room (single bed). Had two couples in the group, the other couple also had a couples room. The bed itself was disgusting (holes in the box spring, ripped, looked like it came from the side of the road), but being a hostel I looked over a lot of the questionable cleanliness. That was until I noticed... More

I was one of the long-term hostel stayers during my time in Auckland but it is very apparent the Base is more oriented for short-term stays. Long-terms are often moved into the Strand area of the hostel (the old, smelly, and in need of repairs portion of the building). Also, they get shuffled around each week depending on what meets... We stayed at the base for just one night whilst we were attending an event. Basic facilities and a lot of noise from other guests in the early hours. But that is to be expected with a large backpakers. Overall the accom was in the perfect location to explore downtown auckland and the rooms were very clean and tidy.(although very... More

Our stay at base was brief and I am very glad it was. We arrived and despite the staff being friendly enough the place did not have a friendly atmosphere. No one spoke or even smiled at us in the communal areas. We felt like the unwelcome new kids at school. We just retreated and spent the evening doing our... More

We stayed here a week after we arrived into Auckland as part of a STA travel package. Pros: It was in a very good central location, with a countdown round the corner and town and the sky tower a short walk away. we liked that there were lockers for your bags under the bunks. Most of the staff were very... More
