The beds were comfortable but my friend and I were on a kind of mezzaine above the bunk beds which were difficult to climb up to without disturbing people sleeping, as we had to climb on their mattresses. The showers were cold and not very strong, but the bathrooms were clean. Theres a big kitchen area but not much of... More

We stayed here for a weekend in a double room. Its a large accomodation, and well set up. The kitchen was great, and there is plenty of room for all sorts of people. We were glad not to be disturbed by the drunken party in the kitchen on the Saturday night, as it seemed to be well sound proofed. The... More

We stayed here for a week to hike in and explore Tongariro National Park. The room was clean and everything worked well. Kitchen was well set up with lots of storage space. No problems with several groups trying to make a meal at the same time. Common areas were a great place to visit. Staff were very helpful and knowledgeable... More

Stayed here with a couple of friends in late September this year before and after doing a two day tramp of the Tongariro Northern Circuit. There were 7 of us and they put us up in an 8 bed dorm which was clean and comfortable. The shared toilets were also clean and had hot showers. They have a well equipped... More

After checking out two other more upmarket hotels/motels in NP that didn't seem too interested in whether I stayed or went I stopped by the National Park Hotel (corner Carroll and Ward, not the YHA of similar name) and was warmly greeted by the owner / new manager John, who has recently taken over after booting out the previous leaseholders... We briefly stayed in the area as we were passing through the North Island. Staff were very helpful although there was a mixup with the booking due to the other backpacker facility being full. Once sorted we checked into the room for some well deserved rest. The facilities are basic with a shared bathroom, there is a pool table &... More

When I stayed here the hostel was full due to a running event. There was still more than enough space to move around and to find a quite place. The interior is a bit old but everything was clean enough to use it. It is a great location to use as a base for the tongariro trekking. Had a good... More

We spent one night at this hostel, prior to going hiking in the nearby Tongariro National Park. We stayed in the private 'family' room which had two bunk beds (one had two singles, the second had a single on top, double on bottom). The room was decent enough, nothing fancy. The shared bathooms down the hall were clean. Only complaints... More

Great location for crossing, good deal as they cater to backpackers or if you want backpacker prices but really want someone else to fix you a fantastic meal. Restaurant is worth visiting whether you stay here or not. Amazing food - try the venison shank! There is always a vegetarian dish as well. Bottle store on premises so they have... More

The photos of this backpackers show the National Park Backpackers YHA on Findlay Street, a great backpackers. The 'backpackers' on Carroll Street however is not. We went to the Findlay Street backpackers to check in, and were told they had no reservation for us and there's been a few mistakes as it appears this hotel has slapped 'backpackers' at the... More
