We enjoyed this small hotel which is conveniently located to the southern cross railway station. Rooms are well appointed, clean, and staff were very helpfu and personal. The breakfast area is small but fine for what we wanted. There is no bar or cafe in the hotel but other options are close by. While it is located on the west... More

We are very pleased to read that we made another guest happy. Our restaurant and lounge bar is open Monday to Friday evenings from 5:30pm. However as many of our weekend guests are more interested in sampling Melbourne's excellent food options or exploring little hidden treasure bars we do not open for evening service on Saturday and Sundays. The lounge... More

I've stayed here 3 times in the last 3 years, for work. This time I had a handwritten welcome back note and chocolates awaiting me on arrival. The rooms are on the small side, but not the smallest I've seen - but they are well appointed with a small kitchen that includes a microwave. You'll even find a complimentary loan... More

Unfortunately, we really didn't enjoy our time in Melbourne but it definitely was't the Alto's fault. For the first 2 nights we stayed in 2 bed apartment with one bathroom and for the last night it was in a 2 bed apartment with 2 bathrooms. I would definitely recommend the 2 bed apartment with one bathroom as the layout was... More

My partner and I appreciated the extra features (WiFi and Microwave/Toaster) which some places don't offer for similar pricing. We were particularly fond of the hotels 'Eco' approach to things. Even something as simple as a recycling bin in the room, everywhere should have this! Bathroom & Shower well sized, bed comfortable and Foxtel also added to the bonuses! Will... More

Mid January we stayed at the Alto for a few days as my husband was at a conference. We booked the Alto as it offered not only the room but also a sitting room with kitchen facilities and a refrigerator for the same price as many other hotels which offered only the room. It is a small very well run... More

we spent a total of 5 nights here. The first 3 being in room 401 which is terrific. Large bedroom , lounge area kitchen etc. On our return we had a normal studio room which was comfortable though smaller. The staff are incredibly friendly and efficient. Great to see same staff members so often. the breakfast menu was excellent as... More

My husband and I just spent 5 nights at the Alto in Melbourne. I had carefully researched different options before choosing the Alto. I have ALWAYS used a travel gent for all our holidays but this was my first endeavour in booking flights, accommodation, transfers and day trips online. We were extremely happy with the whole process. The Alto was... More

My husband and I stayed here on the Australia Day Long Weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. We were checked in promptly by Andrew at reception, who handled everything with a friendly and professional manner. We liked the fact that we were seeing the same staff most of the time too which makes the experience more personal as well. We... More

Long weekend stay at the Alto with our trip to Melbourne. First impressions are good and the location is excellent from arrival into town on the sky bus from the airport (terminal is <100m from the hotel). Hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating when a small issue was noted with the availability of the room (they thought it was... More

We've been to Melbourne many times but only ever as a couple. This time, we had with us our 7 year old child and needed to find something that could accommodate them without encroaching on our personal space or on the budget. The Alto ended up being the perfect place. I'd like to point out those things that really made... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
