We got a townhouse room with an upstairs 2 bedrooms and bath and a downstairs with small kitchen, bathroom and living space. Altho, spaces were small, the spaces (floor/room layout) were well designed and comfortable. There was a small balcony but not enough room for table or chairs. Rooms were clean and beds comfortable. Easy walk to many attractions and... More

A well located boutique 4 star hotel, right at the doorstep of the airport shuttle stop. It's in a narrow building, with a relatively snug reception area. The check in process was efficient and smooth. The rooms were well-appointed with super comfortable beds, a work desk and armchairs. The room wasn't huge, but space was sufficient. You have an electronic... More

Don't be put off by the outside this is a great place to stay. Great location-very close to sky terminus and a tram stop 50 metres from hotel so getting around Melbourne was easy, plus it's close to the Docklands area; great freshly cooked breakfasts, good clean rooms with comfortable beds, helpful staff; good wifi. All that at a good... More

We stayed here overnight when attending my husband's corporate Xmas party. Booked a parking spot and room had everything we needed, & welcome free Wifi. Coffee available all night & free fruit was very nice. Breakfast was delightful, thoroughly enjoyed our stay & will definitely return here whenever we stay in the city again. Close to everything with a tram... More

We stayed four nights and loved the hotel. So close to the Southern Cross Station and tram stop! The queen room was very clean and spacious. The bed was very comfortable and the WiFi was the best. The service was excellent, from checking in to the restaurant staff, it was superb. We included the breakfast with the room and it... More

Well located, 2 minutes walk from Southern Cross Station and Tram stop. Petite queen room spacious and clean for a couple. The free WiFi is amazing fast, at least 8Mbit/s speed. Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The only drawback of the shower was very narrow.

I recently stayed at the Alto four four nights with my husband, two grown daughters and one boyfriend of a daughter. We had a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom duplex. After two nights we decided to add a studio room for my daughter and her boyfriend for more space and because the rate was quite affordable. The rooms are a little small in... More

Great little boutique hotel that is perfectly situated for everything you need. 1 minute walk to Southern Cross Station, next to the tramline, 5 minute walk to DFO outlets and Crown Casino. The rooms were perfect. 2 Adults and 1 14 year old and the foldout couch was very comfortable and still left enough room to move around the room.... More

Agree with all the previous positive reviews. I wish there was a chain of Alto's in every Australian capital city. Alas, only the one at present. Great value for the price, when you include all the little extras thrown in. Location is excellent. We didn't bother with a car. After arriving by train at Southern Cross station and exiting at... Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
