We traveled for a tennis competition with my daughter. The location was excellent. The staff was excellent and very proficient to make us comfortable. The food and the service we could not wish more. The only issue was that the rooms and the hotel as a whole was dated. The company needs to spend some money to do some renovation... More

The Mercure Welcome hotel is situated in the middle of the Bourke Street mall. You walk out the door and you are in the middle of the shopping and restaurant area. Our room was basic but clean, cool and the ensuite was new. The hot water was instant and boiling hot. Our bed was enormous and very comfortable. There is... More

Very central CBD location. Double bed split in the centre can be a "pain", but apart from that, still comfortable. Like most hotels that upgrade the bathroom, the new super-duper sink becomes a challenge when filling up the jug.

This is a well priced hotel (in Australian terms!) that is centrally located to be able to easily get around and see what Melbourne has to offer. Located right next to Bourke Street, there is plenty of shopping at some of the major outlets within a few steps. Trams are right at the door step too. A short walk one... More

An alright spot to stay in for a night or two... location is fantastic but the rooms themselves are a bit outdated. No microwave in my room, and mini fridge hums quite noisily during the day/night. Walls are also very thin. It is right smack bang in the middle of Melbourne's shopping strip, so if you're here on a budget... More

I stayed for 4 nights, and have stayed at this hotel most times when I'm in Melbourne because of its location in the CBD, and because it covers all basic services very well. It's clean, staff are generally efficient and friendly without being intrusive. It is an old hotel, which I would rate 3-3+ star, and on this occasion I... More

Tiles missing from the wall in the bathroom and paint peeling off the door. The wardrobe is to short to hang your trousers. The elevators are terribly slow. The in house restaurant "Louden" is worth passing up. The foyer smelt like someone had been using it as a toilet. I only stayed here because it was selected by the company... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
