Booked the hotel on line in advance of our first trip from the US to Australia. We had one overnight in Melbourne and booked the Hotel Sofia. We received confirmation for the reservation and notice that our credit card had been charged from the hotel. Everything looked good and we started our trip. The day before we were to check... More

I have never written a review in my life, but this has to be known for the other people who may consider this place... So here's the story. We arrived about 7:30pm on Monday evening and went to check in. There was no one at the front desk. We waited for about 10 mins before someone appeared. Our booking was... More

Whilst this hotel is far from first class the value for money is second to none. $100 AUD on average includes a cooked brekky. if you are looking for opulence then this is not for you BUT if you want somewhere with value then jump on it. Rooms are small but clean and tidy, good quality linens on the beds... More

Pros - Good clean room though it is small - Very good location - Price wise good as well Cons - Service almost non existent If you are looking to roam around in Melbourne without spending too much time in the room, then this a very good option. Only thing I would recommend to this hotel would be to atleast... More

we booked this online and although it was in the centre of clubland it was okay for our stay. The room was a bit small but you get what you pay for. Staff were helpful and Breakfast was good. When we were there the lift broke so it kept us fit climbing 4 flights of stairs.

The Hotel seems to have had some recent renovations and had strong new paint smell. Room was tidy and simple as expected for the low cost. However the water pressure in the basin was little more than a dribble (shower was ok though), and the TV remote was also intermittent. The housekeeping was inconsistent with the first day being quite... More

We spent two nights in Hotel Sofia, after a satisfying experience two years ago. Unfortunately, we were this time very disappointed by the quality of the hotel in general and its staff in particular. Rooms, although clean, are very noisy, there is a door between most of them (all of them according to the staff), so that you can hear... More

SOFIA'S WON'T REFUND US OUR DEPOSIT ($150) OR ROOM ($95.50) WHEN WE DIDN'T STAY! We booked into Sofia's having stayed before. However this time the room was small, and in poor condition (e.g. toilet roll holder broken off). The room smelt and when the airconditioner was turned on it made it worse. We rang and asked reception if they had... More

I stayed at Hotel Sofia last week on a standard double room, paying $89 for it - and that includes a hot breakfast. It was definitely good value. And the location is also excellent. I'm making it my preferred place to stay now if and when I do have to stay in the Melbourne CBD in the future. Yes, it's... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
