Although the hotel is far from luxurious and there is no view it is more than adequate for a couple to have an inexpensive stay in the centre of Melbourne. There was a minor problem getting staff to understand what you wanted because of the fact that they were of Asian extraction and knowledge of the English language was not... More

The City Garden suited my stay in Melbourne as I needed something close to Ethiad Stadium to attend The Military Tattoo. The staff there were helpful in all my inquiries like transport, food outlets, etc. The room was excellent, plenty of towels, clean and suited my needs.Even though the price was in the low range it did not reflect on the quality. I would... More

Hotel is clean but a little tired, requiring a repaint. Excellent location though. Not the hotel to pick if you want to spend much time in your room as the tv is small and only gets 4 channels and there is no view from the room. But if you purely need a base to sleep only and aren't going to... More

If the below items are what you look for in a hotel, then this place is perfect for you: - Locks on the front door that takes 10 mins to lock or unlock - Large stains on the carpet - Worn and torn leather lounge - Blinds that don't work - Cleaning equipment (mops, buckets, etc.) left in the courtyard... I stayed in City Garden for 4 nights from end Jan to 1 February. Location wise, it s near the eateries and outdoor adventure shops. It s also walking distance to China town which has many good food options. However, due to the thinness of the walls or the design of the place, there is a constant smell of food... More

I found myself staying at city garden hotel. O.K. It is old, a very plain frosted glass window with just 2 panes of clear glass so I could see the brick wall view., on checking in I was told I was upgraded to a studio with kitchenette, I though wow, carpet in corridors badly needs replacing, I was a trifle... OK.. We have stayed at many city hotels, large and small. This place is small. It does have a great location. Close to Hardware Lane for some great restaurants and close to trams for transport. This is the only plus about the place. Very small and dingy room we had. It had sort of been half renovated with old and... More

Most hotels were booked out for tennis but this one came up with mixed reviews so we thought we would give it a go. Beds were clean and comfortable, shower had good hot water, great location.. Couch needed to go to the rubbish tip a long with the carpet and hairdryer. The bathroom had been renovated in the last 10... More

Such friendly staff made us feel comfortable and at ease with staying with little kids in the middle of Melbourne. The front desk service was of optimal standard and the assistant to room requests felt like a friend rather than an employee. The room was very spacious and "rustic" - it seems to need refurbishing but that suited us with... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
