The Astor is Tildy, Tildy is the Astor. Booking was by a simple exchange of e-mail, no deposit or other security. On arrival, welcomed by name (Tildy had seen our transport draw up and worked out who we were) The en-suite room was spacious, recently refurbished, equipped with kettle, fridge etc. No silly little cartons of milk, fresh milk is available... Astor Private Hotel is clearly a five star hotel due to its friendly and professional staff (that is Tildy & co). Everything was easy from the first contact by phone and email to the last farewell waving. If you want a bathroom in your room you can have it, if there is one available. But the shared bathrooms are very... More

My husband and I stayed in a 'suite' room for 3 nights in October. Tildy was very accommodating of our flight's arrival time of 9pm and was there to greet us. As other people have commented, Tildy, who is the owner, is a very unique person, and is full of very entertaining stories. The hotel is a 5ish minute walk... More

A very comfortable hotel offering affordable accommodation and breakfast close to Central Hobart. Tildy the manager is a larger than life character. The Art Deco surroundings add to the charm. Common room for watching TV, reading, talking to Tildy or to the other guests. Highly recommended.

I stayed in the Astor for 3 nights. The experience was pleasant. The Astor is not a run of the mill hotel nor is the manageress/proprietor a run of the mill front of house manager. The Astor is an older hotel and 'in real estate speak' has kept a large number of its historic features, all positive. My room (a... More

I'm an old Hobart boy and travel back very frequently and have stayed in just about all of the hotels and motels in Hobart. And nothing beats the Astor Private Hotel for style and value. The hotel oozes old world charm and is a throwback to the days when hotels were welcoming, interesting and individual. Sure, it's not the most... More

If you appreciate a great welcome and the ambience of staying somewhere steeped in old world warmth and charm, you will love the Astor. Tildy is an absolute character, never short of a great story and far from the reserved staff you will find in a modern chain!! The location is fantastic for walking to the waterfront or... We booked two rooms and stayed at the Astor Hotel with family that was visiting from the USA. We were greeted by one fabulous lady by the name of Tildy who made us feel so welcome. We had rooms 31 and 32 both with en-suits, which were a good size, spacious and comfortable. The beds are great and one can... More

The Astor and I really mean Tilby made our visit for our Mums funeral trouble free. Tilby made sure that we had everything we needed and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay once the funeral was behind us. The Astor is fantastically located that you can walk to both the city and Hobart waterfront really easily. We had Dutch friends stay... More

We selected the Astor Private Hotel based mainly upon Trip Advisor reviews and ratings and again, Trip Advisor proved a valuable tool. The hotel is not new, it is not 5 star, but it is exactly what we wanted. It is an older building and therefore oozes character. If you want the standard hotel room you can book into any... More
