This has all the individuality of a 1920s boutique hotel without the price tag, and with a relaxed and homely feel. Brilliant for a solo traveller, you will make friends in the dining room, and Tildy (Manager) is a woman in a million, You can rely on a warm welcome from her and Nan. Only a short walk to Salamanca... more

Basically picked this hotel initially from info in the Lonely Planet guide and was so glad we did cause it was amazing. Firstly from walking through the front door and seeing the amazing fittings etc. in this beautiful old hotel to the most friendly and lovely Tildy - what a gem she is. One of Hobart's treasures! Her mum, Rose... more

The Astor Private Hotel offers an old world charm and ambience that in all my travels on this globe, have never quite experienced. I was initially disappointed there were no en-suite rooms available, however, in the end it hardly mattered. Bathroom facilities were plentiful, and always spotlessly clean. I did manage to view an ensuite room upstairs, and I have... more

Back to Hobart again for 4 lovely nights at the best hotel in town... This is a very special place where you feel you have indeed stepped back into a calmer. more civilized era. Tildy's incrediby warm, geniune demeanour only serves to confirm the feeling you have been transported... somewhere better. more

I have stayed in many hotels worlwide, and this would be on par with the best of them. The ensuite room I was a guest in was spotlessly clean, my king regards to Tildy and Nan for making my stay so welcome; well done ladies from Eddie the Scot from Melbourne, more

Remember visiting your grandmother when you were young? Mine had a lovely old place with dark carpets, dark panelling, high ceilings and wonderful atmosphere. The Astor is a bit like that - a reminder of days gone by when private hotels had an allure and character, and interesting old ladies emerged from rooms. The manager, Tildy, is far too young... more

We stayed in a recently remodeled ensuite room for $99 per night (including continental breakfast) and couldn't have asked for more. It was beautifully appointed, well located and the owner, Tildy, was delightful, as were the other guests, who we were able to mingle with in the tv room and at breakfast. It has the feel of a B&B without... more

Just two additional notes to the review already written - having read other travellers' reviews, I should say that we stayed in one of the ensuite rooms (which was really lovely), and the hotel is not Victorian, it's much later than that - probably 1920s or 30s. So don't expect chintz. more

Not much to to add to what others have said - Tildy is great, the place is nicely restored with great atmosphere, the room was big, comfortable and very good value. We immediately felt comfortable there. Tildy brings a certain sort of style to the place, and it's such a relief to stay in a place that's not pretending to... more
