We spent three nights at the Homestead in the self-contained cottage. It was great to experience life on a real cattle station in the middle of Australia, even for a short time. Our host, Maggie, was lovely - so friendly and helpful. The sunrise and sunset each day was spectacular and we could hear dingoes howling in the wee small... More

The trip out to Old Ambalindum Homestead requires a vehicle with clearance......irrespective of which way you go (Stuart Hwy or Ross Hwy). Travelling in on the Ross Hwy is quicker and you get to travel through Arltunga which is worth a look. When you get to the Homestead it's all rustic.....rural......and really, really good. Our accommodation was in the 'Cottage'... More

Great base from which to explore NSW's first town - Arltunga & the spectacular Trephina Gorge. Unfortunately with the rains Ruby Gorge was closed when we were there... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Old Ambalindum Homestead, dating back to the early 1900s, has been renovated recently and is now open for visitors. A range of accommodation is available, from camping sites and bunkhouse to the air-conditioned comfort of the Old Ambalindum homestead itself. Ambalindum Station is a working cattle station of more than 3000 sq km about 135km northeast of Alice Springs. It is one of the original cattle stations settled in Central Australia and its immediate surrounds feature some of the most spectacular scenery in Central Australia. Activities include 4 wheel driving, bushwalking, mountain bike riding, bird watching and boating on our lake. Old Ambalindum is off the Arltunga Loop tourist road to the east of Alice Springs on the newly promoted Binns Track. Due to our recent rains the track however is currently recommended for 4WD only. Comfortable, affordable and friendly, Old Ambalindum offers a true outback experience with a host of options whether staying for a couple of days or longer.. ... more   less
