This is a nice enough Irish pub conveniently located in The Rocks immediately adjacent to their weekend market. They pour a good pint, the outside seating is nice when available but the lack of servers outside, at least during the day when I was there was disappointing. As a solo traveler if I wanted to order anything I had to... More

Hello, Thank you for the nice feedback! We do provide table service in the main dining areas. We've noticed this does become a problem with people trying to hold tables outside and do our best to look after you. Apologies, we didn't get to you this time! We try accommodate all of our guests, smokers and non smokers, and working... More

This pub is the oldest continually running Irish Pub in Sydney. Not expensive but being in The Rocks area, just under the Harbour Bridge adds that something special. Saturday afternoon, and Sunday night live music something special.

My family and I were looking for a place to stay in central Sydney which was close to the Ferry Terminal before going on a cruise. My mum was the one who ended up booking this hotel but it was certainly not quite what we expected. On the plus side, you couldn't get closer accommodation to the waterfront if you... More

Hello, Thank you for the comments, much appreciated! We do have a pub operating downstairs with music until late on weekends. Next time in town, we will try accommodate you in one of our quieter rooms (or even one of our en suite rooms) that's not directly above the pub. Weekdays too when we close earlier would be ideal. Best... More

A splendid lunch whilst watching the world go by. The Irish pie was delicious and the Guiness sublime. The Irish bangers and mash and the fish and chips were equally good. Staff were very pleasant and it was a relaxing interlude whilst shopping.

We visited the Mercantile for a few beers and lunch with our twins (13 year olds - they had lemonade!) and we all had the lunch special. Bearing in mind, one of the twins was in a wheelchair with a full leg cast, so she had very limited mobility. We were welcomed like royalty, the staff spotted the wheelchair and... More

Spent several hours here while it was raining. Great atmosphere and really friendly staff. There was a band on ( Shindig ) who really made everyone feel at home. Even though it was very busy service was excellent. Food was good too. It's a shame we never found this place earlier on our visit - but we will do what... More

If you book a room in The Mercantile, then you know it is a pub that caters for live bands and is in the same street at the Rocks Market is on a weekend. So expect it to be noisy and busy out side and in. For the location and price though, it is brilliant Air Conditioner was a free... More

Guinness was the first attraction, but the location and low cost were important, too. The Mercantile, dating from 1915, is perfectly located in The Rocks, under 10 minutes to the airport train, an easy 2 blocks to the cruise ship dock, 5 minutes to the ferries and other transportation, and 15 minutes around Circular Quay to the Opera House and... My sister and I stayed here for one night (Monday) in a twin room before joining a cruise. The location is perfect, being close to Circular Quay and the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Our arrival was met with friendly check-in and help with bags upstairs (not sure if there is a lift). Our bright and clean room was great and had... More

Staying in The Rocks

Neighborhood Profile
The Rocks
The first residents of the Rocks were convicts and sailors from the old nation. As the oldest neighborhood in the city, the area's cobblestone streets host more than 100 heritage sites and buildings, including the oldest house in Sydney, Camden Cottage, which was built in 1816. Taste a “midi “ or a “schooner” of beer and dine “al fresco” on the waterfront at some of the oldest pubs in Sydney. The weekend markets at the Rocks are where you can find local artists' hand-made souvenirs, organic food and designer jewelry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. To enjoy some of the best Australian and international contemporary art, the MCA museum is open every day and select evenings. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, be sure to save energy to dance the night away at the area's many late night entertainment venues.
