I stayed here for 3 nights while looking around Canberra for rental accommodation for an upcoming interstate move. I suspect they get customers because of a lack of competition for cheap accommodation in Canberra. The YHA is in the city, but doesn't offer private rooms, which is why I went with Dickson. So, Pluses: The location is not bad (inner... More

Has a fantastic kitchen and very clean premises. Comfortable and in a good position with a good variety of restaurants close by. Manager was very friendly and helpful. Public transport on the doorstep, good position to explore everything that Canberra has to offer.

I once visited the concentration camp at Auswitz and the rooms were nicer and service more welcoming. The rooms were super hot and it took a whole day to get the manager to allow us to turn the air con on. Despite it being advertised as air con rooms. The kitchen and bathroom areas looked identical. Disgusting. At $140 a... More

I think if your guests are uncomfortable but you refuse to turn the air conditioning because of the expense then you need to reconsider what you're offering. Because it certainly isn't hospitality. Bloody disgrace.

We booked this hostel on booking.com on our way from Melbourne to Sydney. Having had experiences with hostels and backpackers across Australia we were pleasantly surprised at the location of this hostel, right in the heart of everything.....so many food choices! The beds were clean and comfortable and the heating was toasty warm! The hostel has a huge communal kitchen... More

We recently spent 3 nights at this establishment and having read some previous reviews were a but hesitant but we were pleasantly surprised. The place was sparkling clean and there were no signs of dirty kitchen or bathrooms, in fact the place was spotless. Other guests who we spoke to had said that the group who had been in house... Basically, if you enjoy unhygienic bathrooms with urine stains and rusty door hangers, mouldy food hidden in cupboards, thin blankets and pillows, noise pollution, questionable smells, rude and intolerant staff, leering and inappropriate guests that make you feel uncomfortable, and dark, dirty corridors, then this is the place for you. Seriously, you'll love it.

I have stayed in budget hostels in almost every state in Australia and most countries in Eastern Europe. None have smelt as bad as Dickson Backpackers. I stayed here for 5 nights. On day one, I found raw chicken in a cupboard. On day two, I found some sort of rotten egg concoction in a drawer. On days three, four... More

I have stayed in Hostels across the country, Europe, and America, often for a lesser fee than Dickson charges customers. However, this was the worst accommodation I have ever stepped into. The hostel had a disgusting odour throughout, which can only be categorised as a mix between rotting meat, and soy sauce spills. The hostel is incredibly dark, and management... More

Of the many hostels I have stayed in across Australia, Asia and Europe, this was by far the worst. A terrible smell pervades the entire building. It is matched by a dirty kitchen, with raw meat in the cupboards. The rooms appear fine, but the sheets were covered in stains. But the worst of the worst was the state of... More
