Visited Sunday after a walk around Ruperra Castle. A lovely open fire welcomed us in from the cold along with a glass of Directors. We were dubious about leaving the fireplace , but the upstairs dining room was lovely and warm. We all ordered leek and potato soup which was lively and hot and three of us the roast beef... More

I organised our annual Christmas gathering at The Hollybush for location and the history. Our group had varied dietry requirements of which Jacky and her staff were very happy to acomodate. The food was hot and tasty with no delays so we were all able to eat together. The guests who had opted for the steak all stated it was... More

Reading some of the negative reviews before arrival I was slightly worried. However, my worries were dispelled on arrival. Arrived with my daughter for a night away for her birthday, in pouring rain. The lady who checked us in was very welcoming. The room was very nice, when we came back cold and wet from Cardiff was lovely and toasty... More

We booked a room at the last minute and it cost £40 so less than a Travelodge. The picture of the pub looked nice so we decided to to give it a go. We only wanted to stay one night and the pub did food so we wouldn't need to go out again to eat. The good points were that... More

Stayed here for two nights during my daughter's graduation in Newport - I had to book three rooms for: myself, my daughter and her boyfriend, and his parents - it was the fourth place I tried as there was no other accommodation available for five people in the same place during graduation week. It was a bit out of the... More

Through a hotel booking website Hollybush was advertised at £40 per night. We phoned to book but were told the price was £100 for room only. We went back to website & booked online for £40. On arrival we knocked on the pub door & were shown to a room in a building in the car park. The smell of... More

Visited with my husband, son and his fiance. Booked into restaurant which, on Web page says grills. Wasn't too happy to be told Sunday lunch only. To be honest we were going yo leave but they offered us the grill menu. Downstairs is a different menu but unable to have this upstairs, they did however, on this occasion let us... More

We've been here a few times now when visiting family in South Wales, but I wonder whether the reason that we return is due to there not being many other viable options for what is, on the whole, good food. As other reviewers have commented, the biggest downfall is probably the attitude of the staff. The younger females have always... More

Doesn't matter what your request is. Staff will say no without any thought and without checking. Decaf coffee? No. Bread basket? No. Particular desert on the menu? No (for the second time in a row). Steak rare? No chance. Customer services and decor straight from the 80s. I imagine it only keeps going because of its location.

Ive been to this pub for food a few times over the years but Sunday was a gorgeous day and we wanted a nice location for lunch. It was very quiet when we arrived 12.30ish. We sat outside to eat and there was cutlery, newpapers, napkins, sauce sachets everywhere. When food did arrive after quite a long wait it wasnt... More
