I first saw Deetjens in 2010 while staying at the Ventana Inn in Big Sur. I was totally charmed by Deetjens, took many photos, and dreamed all year of staying there this summer. Our summer trip finally came, and on July 29 and 30, 2011, we stayed in the "New Room" at Deetjens. It was wonderful and just as delightful... More

It is difficult to describe Deetjens in words.. you must experience this magical mystical place. We stayed in Chateau Fiasco and rediscovered life and each other. Take a walk in the misty morning and enjoy a delicious breakfast. Make sure you meet Doris.. we loved her.

We stay 1 night in June 2011, and I have to say that I really regret I did not stay 1 or 2 nights longer. It was so nice! we hab the champagne chalet. nice rooms, and beds. in a drawer you can find book where guests left their comments. so nice to read it, and you can of course... More

I stayed in the tiny Castro cabin with my girlfriend for two nights. We both loved it. It felt like a little hobbit house set amongst beautiful red woods by a rushing waterfall. Very romantic. Part of the charm is of course its location. Big Sur is jawdroppingly beautiful and still feels wild and fairly empty (at least in May).... More

Nice funky spot, small cozy rooms, shared bath a bit odd. big problem is the shower had enough pressure to provide drips of water. Fantastic dinner- very memorable

Deetjen's, as others have said here, is a truly quirky place that you'll either get (and love) or not get (and wish you had avoided it). The descriptions on tripadvisor are all correct, but none quite prepared me for the place. There are a few sumptuous luxuries like the linen bedlinen, fluffy towels and great food. Apart from that, you'll... More

Dear Belfast, Thank you for your thoughtful review of our Inn. We are an historic Inn (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) that tries to provide guests with a little of the "old Big Sur" of the WWII and post-war era, while also offering contemporary creature comforts such as real linens, comfortable beds, and amazing food. Caring for... More

Stayed for 3 nights. Rooms are very rustic and could barely fit into bathroom. Service made bed but never replaced dirty glasses. Parking is tough and near office gets very noisy. Thought food was overpriced and paid $150. for dinner and $40 for breakfast for 2 people. No phone or internet service but that was a welcome thing.

We have stayed at this property so many times we stopped counting. Every room with a private bath we have slept in. We keep a list of rooms we like in descending order based on the time of year. No longer do we recommend this place to just anyone. The people who stay here either get it or they don't.... More

I see why this place got some negative reviews. However, our stay in Big Sur and at Deetjen's was the highlight of our California road trip TIP: Expect a rustic/camping-like experience. Which makes sense given the surroundings in Big Sur. If on a budget, stay in the cheapest room (Grandpa's room, I think it was called.) Do NOT expect a... More

I agree with quite a few things in 'boomshakes' review. I understand that this hotel is a preserved set of buildings but they should not use that as an excuse. I also get the fact that the Americans who visit think it's great and quaint and quirky etc. It is on the pricey side and it is basically a set... More
