My wife and I stayed one night at this charming, rustic, amazing, romantic, unbelieveable property. I could go on. This place embodies everything that Big Sur is about. A beautiful location that contains a perfect mix of nature, florals, natural elements and a spiritiual calm to it all. All of the cabins and the rooms seem to be perfect. Each... More

Like most people we stayed one night here whilst driving the Pacific Coast Highway. We had the "Little Room" which was actually larger than expected and was in great condition considering it's in the oldest building on the premises, and a relative snip at $115 a night. The shared bathrooms were absolutely fine, not the best or biggest but perfectly... More

We stayed in 'Faraway'. Wow. It's basic. But wonderfully so. We were warm, peaceful, well fed and comfortable. Don't expect plush or pretentious but do enjoy the quiet and the highly unusual surroundings. Eat if the restaurant. The evening meal was fabulous. Eggs Benedict in the morning is to die for. If you travel with a baby, make sure you... More

By rights it should be called a camp and not an inn. True we were informed that the walls would be thin and the accommodations were "rustic". However, it was not a cozy rustic; it was a crappy what rustic. We stayed in the "antique room". Among the interesting antiques were the rusty sink, the smelly plumbing, the doors that... More

One word to discribe this inn; quirky. You feel like you walk into the fairytale land, back in time for 100 years. Nice room with a fireplace. We received matches at the reception to light it and so we did. The restaurant served nice food and breakfast was great too. No cell phone reach, nor internet connection, paper thin walls,... More

My wife and I love this hotel. But it's rustic. It's like you're stepping back in time and experiencing Big Sur 80 years ago. Each 'room' is unique. Some 'rooms' are actually cabins. It's nestled right off of the PCH, amid it's own grove of redwoods. Don't expect much in terms of service, it's not a place known for catering... More

The single most romantic, pleasant and fun place to stay on the entire California coast, tied with St. Orres & some of the Sea Ranch rentals. I love the cabins. If you're not the kind of person who needs to be entertained by 24/7 television, or needs room service, and can go to sleep to the sound of the wind... More

This is a gorgeous spot in California, a lovely waystation on a tour of the PCH. We chose Deetjen's due to the relative affordability compared to Ventana and Post Ranch Inn, both of which are just around the bend. We enjoyed our stay here but as all the reports say there is very little privacy. We stayed in Grandpa's Room... More

I stayed at Deetjen's years ago in one of the separate cabins. This time, we were in the main house, where five rooms share two bathrooms. The walls are paper thin, so we had to put up with someone coughing most of the night. It is a charming place, quaint and beautiful, as it was before, but it is also... More

This isn't so much a hotel as a collection of wooden shacks in a complex sanctified by the love and flower power generation. If you like a creaky thin walled wooden house with the upstairs neighbours every move transmitted through the wooden ceiling and mice in the harmonium (they ate an apple we had in our luggage- we expected to...
