was it rustic, yes...but its big sur, as we found all the hotels are off the Main hwy...cuz thats the only place they can be. Yes the hwy does in run in front of the cabins across the street from the actual main building , restaurant etc, but we found it not to be a problem other than we didnt... More

I love "rustic" but this place was really pushing it in trying to be upscale rustic. The rooms are right beside the busy highway and at over $150 bucks per night, we obtained a room that reeked of bug spray. There is a bashed in dirty space heater in the wall that did work very well, mind you, though you... More

Although I agree with some of the comments on previous reviews (restaurant closes earlier than would like) this was a great litte spot. The food was great quality and as such the price reasonable in our eyes. The deck overlooking the river has heaters so nice to eat outdoors in March - certainly unable to do this at home at... More

Make no mistake, Big Sur River Inn is an old motel 10 yards from Highway 1. Expect to be ripped off. Let me tell you how you can experience a night at the Big Sur River Inn without leaving your local area: 1. Go to Home Depot. For the price of a night at the River Inn, you can buy... More

We had planned to drive further down the coast to our hotel, but got caught on a nightly road closure from 6pm - 7am. Rather than drive all the way back to Monterrey, we stopped for the night at the River Inn. Staff was very nice even gave us a better room for the same price - actually got a... More

First of all, I'll preface this post by saying that we got into Big Sur around 5 or 6pm, meaning it was pitch black and made this place seem even dingier than it really is. The rooms are weird - bare minimums, and some people have said "rustic", but we didn't really find it to be rustic, just kind of... More

For the price this was not a good deal. The room was actually an old motel at the side of HW 1. When we checked in the toilet was not working so we asked for another room. They gave us the next one over. At night you could hear every car and truck come by. The front door wouldn't close... More

I experienced a blackout during my stay which lasted throughout the night. No heater and lights in the cold winter night after dinner. The inn finally distributed lanterns for the affected guests after repeated request to get the power back on. Inn receptionist staff was defensive and didn't appear apologetic the following day when i checked out. Very disappointed with... More

I stayed at the River Inn for three nights, arriving late on Christmas night, after a late flight from Chicago. The Inn was closed, but my room key was kindly left on the door of the Inn, with a note to check in the next day. Very, very thoughtful of the staff, and much appreciated. I awoke from a comfortable... More

Big Sur lodging is a lesson in economics: supply and demand. This is a bucolic, remote corridor of the California Coast -- and about $150 per night is the cheapest we could find over Thanksgiving break. There aren't many lodging options -- and most are old-school motels along the highway. Our expectations were not high with Big Sur River Inn,... More
