Most b&b's stays involve a room, a key, a well-manicured garden and little else. Not Karma Backpackers. Vera Ann is a host, ready to offer help on where to go, or where to eat. She rightfully sends guests to a small nearby Ethiopian restaurant. Excellent food amongst friendly Ethiopians. And, Karma hasn't the feel of a the usual backpackers. With... More

Karma backpackers was ideal for us to relax after some exhausting traveling. We enjoyed the homely atmosphere and the company of Vera Ann and the other travelers, went on exciting day trips with Zee and had great Ethiopian food and coffee thanks to the recommendations we got during our stay. No need to mention the jams and the breakfast at... More

It was our accommodation gem during our trip in Drakensberg region. The place is so lovely and Vera-Ann is so hospitable and nice person. She helped us a lot with a tips about hikes and instead of a one night, we stayed two. We had a double room and it looked so cozy and stylish. I love that country style!... More

Warm welcome with coffee and tea (we felt like visiting our grandmother during the whole stay), lovely place like a small paradise, very helpful with tips for hikes, awesome jam, and we enjoyed the braai with salad and potatoes!

We drove straight from Joburg to Kestell & felt very welcomed. Vera-Ann was so sweet & very helpful giving us lots of tips on the surrounding areas & the Drakensberg. It's the closest BP to The Amphitheatre which was an amazing hike & even better view. The backpackers itself is a very cosy, house style place, with a nice kluge,... More

This Hostel made our south african trip more special! The Hostels arrangement is very cosy, nice and lovley. The rooms are clean and cosy aswell, extra blankets and a hot-water bottle (which we did need, because is was very cold during the nights) were prepared for us. The free tea and coffee is good, but the free homemade yam in... More

It's like visiting your grandmother's house. Hot water bottles, homemade jam, and the sweetest woman in the world who owns the place. I have stayed here 4 times with groups of students and each time Vera Anne has gone out of her way to make our stay fantastic. This year we had van problems and she called the Toyota dealership... We had a great time with Vera, she is the most wonderful host and waited until midnight to welcome us with tea after our car decided to pack in. In the morning we were treated to cream cheese muffins and lots of information about hiking up to Wietsieshoek and Lesotho. They even helped push our car out of the car... More

We were so happy staying at Karma Backpackers in our first foray into the Drakensburg Mountains. Comfortable and informal, we felt that we had moved right into the owner's family, (although we could be as private as we wanted to) eating delicious breakfasts with mounds of Vera Ann's wonderful jams. She provided helpful information into our hiking and exploration, insights... More

The warmth and hospitality with which we we're welcomed by Vera Ann and Luther was amazing. We arrived late and they shared some fresh vegetable soup with us. Vera Ann gave us lots of info on how to get on the Amphitheatre and the rest of the surroundings. Breakfast was very good as well. Thanks a lot for this nice... More
