As one of the organisers of the annual 'Youhostel gathering' I have to say Elterwater Hostel was the perfect place in which to bring 40-odd people together for a weekend of socialising, walking, eating and drinking in stunning Langdale. Practically everything about the hostel; the location and character of the building, the upkeep and tidiness of the rooms, the cleanliness... More

Great to hear that you had a successful weekend, and thanks for the lovely review. The guys have now recovered (we've bought them new socks and lay them down on a darkened room for a few hours!) and the smell of cardamom pods has now receded from the kitchen... until next time.. More

Our first visit. We are a group of four that meet annually for walks in the Lakes. We had previously stayed in bed-and-breakfasts but the hostel was a pleasant change and an experience that we all agreed we would be happy to repeat The welcome is warm and sincere, the staff are very knowledgeable about the local area and keen... Thanks for the review, I'm pleased to hear that we compared favourably with your 'normal' choice of accommodation. I'm curious to know if the walk back on a full stomach and having tasted the local beers only took 3 minutes as well? ;-) Handy hint in the quest for a mobile signal if you visit again... go 'native'.. put your... Stayed here a couple of weekends ago with my Dad. Brilliant hostel - very friendly, welcoming & helpful. Beautiful location, lovely little garden with a picnic bench for sunny days, 2 minutes stroll from Britannia Inn. Great breakfasts, very well equipped kitchen, immaculately clean rooms. Slept well in a comfortable bed. We walked Langdale Pikes which are easily accessible by... More

This was a great Hostel as part of the YHA - we hope this continues now that Elterwater sold off like so many other Hostels in the Lakes and UK as a whole.:-( Great location - handy for the nice pub in the village - bike parking - many great bike rides in the area.

I look for small hostels in quiet rural settings with good self-catering facilities, daytime access, a drying room and friendly staff. This hostel has always ticked all those boxes, and even more so now that it is shaking free of the shackles of the YHA. The hostel has a large combined dining/common room with comfy sofas and plenty of tables,... More

wibble_puppy, thanks for a lovely review. It's very kind of you to take time to write in such detail. When you come to visit again, have a word with us and we'll see if we can do you a bit of a deal on a meal and give you a break from cooking, after all, what's the point of a... More

Just got back from a three night stay where we used the hostel for another visit to the central fells. I have stayed there several times (lads and dads weekends etc) and was interested to see the impact of "privatisation". I need not have worried the place is as good as ever. The team running it were great - welcoming... More

Thanks for the great review. As you say, we are very much still here, so thanks for spreading the word... and we're glad you like what we're doing I think it's unlikely we'll have the fireplace built by autumn. It will require a BIG hole and a lot of mess, so it's much more a winter job. In the meantime... More

I stayed for 6 nights here and had a wonderful time. The location is excellent (both for walking and pubbing as the Britannia Inn is one minute walk away), the facilities are very good, including a well-equipped and tidy kitchen, the best showers of my two weeks in the Lakes and a comfy lounge/dining area with some decent books for... A stunning setting for a friendly, spotlessly clean hostel. Great facilities and comfortable living areas. The staff went above and beyond with everything, especially when our car was hit by a driver and written off. I strongly recommend staying here.

This hostel is exactly what I look for when planning a walking holiday. I will be back - again and again. They really are doing everything right. You can't go wrong booking here. I found it entirely welcoming from the moment I walked up - with the common areas being open during the day and the kitchen for me to... More

A superb hostel in a brilliant location. Good, clean facilities, very friendly and helpful staff, good value simple food, free wifi. This is just what hostels should be like, but others rarely manage to live up to it.
