I stayed here as a lone female and was greeted very warmly by the staff. The speedboat here takes a little over an hour and life jackets are issued. On arrival I was offered a refreshing drink and a cool towel. My key was located quickly and I was shown to room 21 at the end of the boardwalk. On... More

I will begin with the most positive thing I can think of: the food quality was decent and no one in our group became ill. This was called a 'luxury hotel'. To me, luxury means certain amenities that might make you more comfortable when stepping indoors. This was not to be the case at Abai Jungle Lodge. The rooms are... More

We stayed at Abai Jungle Lodge for two nights before moving on to the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge. We were actually pleasantly surprised at the accommodation and food on offer, after reading some reviews stating how basic they were. We were in a three-bed room (no. 15), which was clean and functional. Even though there is no A/C, the ceiling fan... More

The accommodation here is fairly basic and the food wasn't great (apart from the banana fritters!) but you come here for the wildlife rather than 4 star facilities, and that was great. Really nice being in a lodge that is only accessible by boat. When out on the river there were very few other boats around. Overall a very enjoyable... More

This place almost defies description. It's simple, but comfortable - accommodation is in bungalows connected by boardwalks. No air conditioning, but comfortable beds, efficient private shower rooms and - surprisingly - wifi in the public areas. It's accessible only by boat, one and a quarter hours from Sim Sim village on the outskirts of Sandakan. The boat trip is enjoyable... More

If your coming to Borneo for beaches and sunshine this isn't your place. If on the other hand you've come to witness one of the most beautiful places on earth in terms of wildlife and nature then this ticks every box for accommodation needs. We went as part of our honeymoon tour of Asia. The staff were well informed because... More

The lodge itself is reached by boat 1 hour from Sandakan. It is located in the jungle and is fairly simple with no aircondition and little light in the standard rooms. Breakfast is taken outside on a platform in the jungle. Boardwalks connecting the rooms and the lodge pier allow for a nice little walk in the jungle which is... More

We arrived here from Sandakan by river (the only access is via the Kinabatangan River) and were greeted by the staff with our first meal (lunch) - very nice. While here (we had two nights) we enjoyed the meals and the wildlife discovery trips by boat. The guides on the boat were excellent in their ability to spot wildlife (some... More

The Abai Jungle lodge was one of the best places we stayed in in Borneo. There are flowers everywhere and the walkways lined with bougainvillea are stunning. You can wander through the jungle on the walkways spotting macaque monkeys and wild boar. There are a number of bird spotting towers you can climb up too. Our room was exactly the... More

Along Kinabatang this must be the top place to stay!. But after visiting Danum valley earlier on our trip it is impossible to give any other place more than 4! The rooms are barely OK. Clean enough, comfortable bed, but kind of worn down and bordering on ugly. Staff service and friendlyness is very good and they will walk the... More
