Spending most of my time in UK Hotels, I tend to find they provide all the things you don't need and none of the things that you do need (unless for an obscene extra price). Take laundry for example, it's typical that they charge £3 per item of underwear, £15 per day for internet access, double the price of local restaurants etc....
When my firm told me I was staying at the youth hostel I was appalled that they'd be so tight as to make me stay in a room full of other people - for three weeks. After they calmed me down I learned that I'd have a room for myself.
Kongsberg Youth Hostel (or Vandererhjem in Norwegian) is certainly basic on furnishings, but the beds are comfortable and it's warm. All the rooms are en-suite and have their own TV's, and are not so small as to feel claustrophobic. It's a 5 minute walk from both the old and new towns.
