If you want a modem hotel and the comforts of home, look elsewhere. But if you want a memorable experience, awesome food, and excellent service, stay with Vali and his family. The dorm and bathroom are not that flash, but acceptable. I slept well. Vali is a little larger than life, and full of stories and questions. I enjoyed these.... More

This place is definitely a good reason to hate Lonely Planet. If you read the description you'll expect one of the best places you've ever stayed at. It won't be! It seems like they can't justify a place in there book to themselves without praising everything into the sky. So I'll try to differentiate a bit more. Pros + It's... More

I stayed with Vali and his family after reading reviews here and I am glad to stay that it was an amazing and comforting experience. Vali and his family went out of their way to make a comfortable stay for us. He has a humble space and yes not entirely clean, but I don't feel it was a rip off.... More

I stayed with Vali for 2 nights, mostly because it sounded like it would be a one-stop solution for Turkmenistan visas (as I found out, it isn't). It's the most hostel-like accommodation in Mashad, but certainly not the cheapest. Local hotels catering to pilgrims charge as little as 6 to 7 USD for a double room with kitchen facilities. His... Vali's was a warm and welcoming dorm which is accessed through a garage door. It's a sanctuary and Vali is the perfect host. The shower is fantastic - like a decontamination facility but there is only one. Vali offers great value food but we were on such a budget we ate bread from the market. He is a genuine host... More

Arriving from a very long journey to Iran, Mashhad was my first landfall in that country. Iranian people are renowned for their hospitality and nowhere is this more true than at Vali's. What a real homestay should be: sharing meals and life with the hosts and learning about their culture and lifestyle. Vali in that respect is all that and... More

This is a very, very, late review. In all I think Vali's is a great place. I arrived on a freezing, misty morning by bus and the city seemed imposing and bleak. After a phone call to Vali, who gave directions to my taxi driver, I was soon nestled in his homestay. Beds were comfortable, there was ample hot water,... More

The good I'll start off with the good things about Vali and his homestay: - the dinners his wife cooks really are very good and offer a lot of variety, with multiple courses; - Vali is a friendly guy and likes to talk about all sorts of things; Vali can offer a significant amount of information about things to do... I originally booked a two night visit, but I liked it so much I stayed a week! Vali is a well travelled cool cat, and his crew can provide you with all the comforts of home. Special thanks to Vali's Missus, whose Persian home cooking is the best you'll have in Iran. Find their email on the web, and they'll... More

Vali is a great character and I really enjoyed spending some time with him in his home and out and about in Mashad. He will welcome you into his home, feed/water you [his wifes cooking is brilliant] and show you around Mashad [he'll also try to sell you a carpet but if you don't want one he's not pushy]. He...
