Had a lovely relaxing stay, booked the bridal suite with four poster bed and it was really comfortable. Walking distance to Gretna Green and the outlet village. Host really friendly and would highly recommend the restaurant.

My husband and I stayed with Linda and Gary for a weekend and they were fantastic hosts. The room was spotless, food impeccable and all COVID precautions were taken and strictly adhered too (something that is very important to myself). I would definitely recommend anyone planning a Gretna stay to try and good hunters lodge hotel.

We stayed here for one night to attend my brother's wedding in Gretna. Linda, the host, was very personable and impressively 'on the ball' regarding my specific dietary (coeliac) requirements; she couldn't have been more helpful and the food served during our evening meal and breakfast was delicious. Compliments to the chef! Our room, although not the best hotel room we've ever stayed in, was comfortable and very clean and had everything we needed for a one night stay. If I was to nit pick, I'd suggest that the 'garden area' outside room 12 needs a good tidy up and rubbish removing since looking out at an Oreos' wrapper and a discarded crisp packet didn't add anything to our stay. An easy fix though!

Judahlion61 Many thanks for your review following your recent stay with us. I am sorry for the litter outside your window, I think itā€™s a sad reflection of society that when litter bins are provided people donā€™t use them. I guess as we donā€™t supply oreoā€™s or the said type of crisp packet, they have probably blown to said location from some thoughtless person. As a small family run hotel the garden is my husbandā€™s responsibility, so I shall add it onto his long to do list . He is also the said chef so have passed on your kind comments about his food. The room that you had has benefitted this year from a new bed so we are glad to hear you had a comfortable nightā€™s stay, we will continue upgrades like this to our rooms whenever possible during what has been a difficult trading time for the last two years, and as the recovery continues maybe I can replace some of my husbandā€™s jobs (painter, decorator, general fixer of any daily issues) with a gardener. Thanks again for your kind comments and look forward to seeing you again in the future. Linda & Garry (Hotel Proprietors)

Very welcoming, friendly, accomodating host on our home move from South of England to Scotland. Kindly providing a fridge for my medication during our stay.
Our evening meal in the bar was delicious and home made.
We were in Room 11 in the annexe and sadly the bed was very hard. We like a firm bed but this was very hard and we could not sleep well. Plus, despite our very caring host who provided an extra heater the room was very cold - we were warm in the bed but the room never warmed up.
Sorry for having to write a dissapointed review because you were so kind to us.

CherryClift Many thanks for your review following your recent stay with us. During these extremely difficult times in all hospitality businesses it is always good to hear positive comments about myself and my husband (chef) as we are a small family hotel. We are sorry to hear that you found the room to be cold ā€“ if only this had been mentioned to us whilst you were having dinner rather that after you have left and posted on a review site then we might have been able to rectify this for you at the time. We have taken on board your point about the heating and have replaced the bedroom heater with a new larger one. It is always a shame to hear negative comments after the event when they could so easily be rectified if we are given a chance. Keep safe. Linda & Garry

Visited Hunterā€™s Lodge for a meal during our recent stay in Scotland. We were really happy with the service and the food was lovely. My husband and I both agreed it was our favourite meal of our stay. Service was efficient and Linda the host was very attentive and willing to advise on the best gins at the hotel :). Booking needs to be made prior due to covid but you wonā€™t be disappointed with the food and we felt very safe whilst inside the hotel. We wanted a slight break between our starters and main meals and this was accommodated. Would definitely recommend.

Could not complain about the food. Dinner & breakfast excellent but the food is the only good thing. Front door locked at all times and coded keypad for residents at rear. Yet the hotel advertises as open to non residents. We had dinner on 1st night but there is absolutely no atmosphere whatsoever. on the 2nd night we dined in hotel down the road which was buzzing with atmosphere. Residents & non residents eating, able to enter and exit without any problem. On morning of departure the money for our room & dinner & breakfast had been taken out of our account before we had even got dressed or been shown our bill!!We had wanted to pay with a different card! Disgusted!!

neil h Many thanks for your review following your recent stay with us. We are sorry to hear that your thoughts were ā€œnot goodā€ on your stay and would like to comment on the following: As you enter the premises we have a glass door which is kept locked. Due to the COVID pandemic both my husband and I made the decision that since this door is not a fire door we would have this locked to protect our customers, staff and ourselves. As a result, we have installed a ā€œRingā€ doorbell and all residents are advised of the situation via our app before their stay. It is also stated clearly on our website too. Obviously this did not impress you but in fact the general consensus of our guests is that they feel safe and happier with this action that we have taken. Scottish Government Guidelines which we have to adhere to advise all members of public that enter a hospitality business must provide their contact details. With the door being locked this eliminates the risk of someone entering and leaving the building without providing their details. The coded keypad was installed as a benefit to our guests. This enables people to come and go as they please and return after weddings with no constraints to times as we do not have a night porter.. We are pleased that you enjoyed your meals with us both in the evening on the first night and breakfast, and it was good to chat with you both too. Unfortunately the atmosphere is a little outwith our control though as this often depends on how many we have eating and/or even the reason for their visitā€¦ often people can be going out to weddings, or retire early due to travelling and a long journey. In relation to the bill, it is stated on all our confirmation emails the process, and states on the website and again states on the app ā€“ if you had wanted an alternative card to be used then all you had to do was say to us and this could quite easily have been rectified. We have a contactless check out process which again reduces the risk to everyone during the COVID pandemic ā€“ a copy of the bill is sent to you overnight and the balance automatically taken from the card that was used at the time of booking., If you had given me the chance on your departure this could easily have been refunded to the card and then processed on an alternative card of your choice., but you never gave me the chance. Linda & Garry (Hotel Proprietors)

Last minute decision to spend a night in Gretna before continuing on our trip down to St Annes on the Saturday. Having spent time in Gretna before for short weekend breaks at other places, initially, the reason for opting for the Hunters Lodge Hotel was the price. Can honestly say, both myself and my wife were not disappointed. The Hotel was Covid Safe with the owners doing everything they could to make your stay enjoyable. Had a lovely evening meal which was freshly cooked as well as freshly cooked breakfast in the morning before leaving. The Hotel is within easy walking distance of the Gretna Retail Outlet and is well located for visiting other attractions in the area. The Bedroom was clean and the owners even provided Hand Sanitiser within the rooms. A well run Hotel which i would not hesitate on returning to. Keep up the good Work.

Linda made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed a splendid evening meal, and the breakfast next morning was a great and delicious start to our day. Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the road (which was quiet) very comfortable with everything that we needed. The shower room was small, but clean and tidy with nice towels. We stayed for one night as a stopover on our way to start the NC500.

We booked last minute online after reading the reviews. On arrival we thought we had booked the wrong date as it appeared to be closed and the large car park was completely empty but the owner was at reception when we entered and was friendly and informative. The room was fine, clean and spacious and the bathroom was functional and clean. We didn't fancy much on the menu so walked down the road to the neighbouring hotel to eat and found it completely different with a busy bar and restaurant. On returning to the Hunters Lodge we found it in almost total darkness at 21.30, still with an empty car park. We didn't have breakfast and checked out at 9.45 with no issues. In summary, nothing really to complain about but a bit of the air of Bates Motel about it, not helped by the loft hatch above the bed! And my wife's response to my suggestion that we install the same tartan carpet at home is not repeatable on a review site.

It was myself who checked you in and out and I am disappointed that you did not mention any of the comments that you've made during your stay with us whilst you were actually here. Upon check in I always advise people if they require anything during their stay to let me know, and upon departure I always ask if everything was all right. What has been the hardest trading period in the whole 34 years my family has owned the hotel, my husband is the chef and I am the ā€œowner on receptionā€. It is always difficult to read such reviews that try to discredit our business and home!! We are a small family business and put everything into it. We canā€™t do anything about it being quiet on a weekday night on the wrong side of summer (maybe cardboard cutouts would be an option), and a tartan carpet is also not uncommon in Scotland!!! Using none of the facilities we offer, perhaps if you had had breakfast or evening meal you might have found it a more enjoyable experience. The hotel was open that evening and lit up till 10.38pm (as we have checked our CCTV) and you arrived back just after 9pm.ā€¦.., the car park was indeed empty as other guests that night had arrived by train!! There are occasions that we may be fully booked but everyone can be out at a wedding/function or even just have gone to bed early after all their travelling. In your words, you have said the room was ā€œclean and spacious and the bathroom was functional and cleanā€ therefore to have your home and business being compared to a horror drama show is not a very nice thing, disappointing and upsetting when we have done nothing wrong. ā€¦. Linda & Garry (Hotel Proprietors)
