Hillbark Hotel is a handsome country house hotel set in a beautifully secluded spot at the heart of the Wirral Peninsula. It is difficult to be certain what is the greater appeal – the fabulous location, offering respite and a rural getaway from the stresses and strains of modern life yet effortlessly accessible and offering a superb base from which to explore the dramatic scenery of the Wirral, Cheshire and Liverpool – European City of Culture 2008; or the charm and grace of the beautiful timbered manor house building, Grade II listed and decorated to an exquisitely high standard, offering some of the most luxurious and sumptuous accommodation in the North West of England. Perhaps the true appeal is that Hillbark Hotel combines its enviable location and quintessential charm in such a complete and satisfying package, rare qualities which Hillbark Hotel possesses in abundance. Hillbark Hotel stands at the heart of 250 acres of glorious grounds, lawns and parkland; drawing up to the entrance of the hotel is an impressive sight, but you may be surprised to learn that despite having the appearance of a Tudor manor house, Hillbark Hotel is in fact of Victorian vintage and, more intriguing still, has only occupied its current location since 1931. The house was originally built in Birkenhead, some 5 miles away, in 1891 by soap manufacturer and entrepreneur Robert William Hudson. It is believed that Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany was so taken by the design that he insisted on having a replica built at Potsdam, at which the Potsdam Agreement of 1945 was signed. Incredibly, by 1945 the house was no longer in Birkenhead; Sir Ernest Royden had bought the property in 1921 and had it moved brick by brick, piece by piece to its current position. The move took 3 years, between 1928 and 1931, and to add still further to the charming idiosyncratic nature, the house contains a 16 th Century fireplace once part of Sir Walter Raleigh’s house, remarkable William Morris stained glass windows and church screen doors dating from the 13 th Century. An eclectic collection of components perhaps, but blended together in a seamless and rather charming package. Having undergone a programme of extensive refurbishment and transformation, Hillbark Hotel has recently opened as the Wirral’s, and possibly the North West’s, most intriguing luxury hotel. more » « less

We stayed here whilst we attended a family funeral, the original hotel we booked had double booked us and so we had to stop at Oxford services and find alternative accomodation. Quite by chance we ended up here, and what a wonderful surprise. Yes it is expensive, however, it is absolutely value for money. I travel a lot for business... more

This is a very long review; you may want to skip to my summary at the bottom. Following the 'mixed' reviews on this site, I decided to go and take a look at this hotel for myself, before I booked a room. I wondered how so many people could have such hugely differing experiences of the same place. Upon my... more

Lovely Jacobean manor house in secluded setting. We ate in the Yellow room, and the meal was gourmet standard, absolutely excellent. £55 per head for four courses plus appetisers, we though was good value for the standard. Only disapointement was the rooms; we had booked a junior suite, which turned out to be a large room with an en suite... more

This hotel charges an awful lot for what it delivers. It is actually a rather small hotel in terms of the number of rooms and obviously focuses its effort upon weddings and events. The bridal suite is very impressive, but you don't want the hotel staff banging on your door at night because it turns out that there is a... more

Found the place to be excellent, we had a meal in the Grill Room - the 'canteen' from the previous review and thought it was lovely, didnt feel at all uncomfortable or like we had gone back to school! Meals were a little on the expensive side but certainly not excessive, and in a way you're paying for the atmosphere... more

Looking forward to a lovely romantic night in what looked like a splenidid hotel. There was no one on reception to greet us, not a great start. Dinner was very poor and over priced, the atmosphere was terrible in the dinning room, a very odd table layout meant you felt like you sitting in rows in a canteen. Dinner was... more

Hillbark Hotel is a really beautiful and unique hotel experience. The building itself is an old mansion with an interesting and romantic past. It is set in acres of beautiful woodland. Each of the bedrooms is unique. We have stayed in a few of the rooms and suites and have seen most of the others when the hotel manager gave... more

Booked a suite. So expected a suite, on arrival through a wedding party - were given the wrong room - a suite is two connected rooms or areas at least, usually including an area where one can relax and have a meal etc away from the sleeping area. This Hotel misrepresentes the room as a suite and expects some of... more

Not only is the setting wonderful but I found the food to be incredible. Whilst the decor in the restaurant was a little opulent for me I cannot fault the service or the Chef. Try it. more
