Greeted with a nice tray of tea and carrot cake as we arrive to check in. Quiet, nice location, beautiful little gardens. Only 4 stars for 2 reasons -- very small Ikea style rooms, and a school-marm who made it quite plain that she was quite displeased with us about an accidental red wine spill! Other than her (she seemed... More

My wife and I booked a last minute getaway to the Lake District and decided to stay at the Cottage in the Wood on the strength of the many positive Trip Advisor reviews. I can only say that everything we read in the reviews was confirmed by our stay. Set in an idyllic location, with stunning views over Borrowdale to... More

We have passed by Cottage in the Woods many times over the years, always saying we would stay there, due to the ideal location: why did we wait so long? This is a perfect bolt hole, hideaway to escape to. We visited with friends for one night and thoroughly enjoyed the taster menu. Highlights included the game terraine, venison main... More

My mother in law and I stayed at the Cottage in the Wood in June. Kath and all her staff made our stay perfect. Its all about customer service here. The staff are very well trained and although they are all professional, they remain kind and helpful. There was a great atmosphere within this small hotel throughout our stay. The... More

Having enjoyed the restaurant in the past, this was our first stay at this boutique hotel in the Whinlatter Forest. The owners and staff are very welcoming. The setting and views are superb and as we found in the past the food is to die for. The breakfast is just as carefully prepared as the main meals.

We stayed as part of a wedding gift from friends. The hospitality, accommodation, food, drink, setting were the best we've experienced! The staff were superb and we left feeling ready for our big day, fully energised. We would recommend this for those wanting fine dining - the food really was exceptional and served by knowledgeable, friendly staff. We can't wait... More

My husband and I went for a last minute lunch while deriving past. we had our dog so sat outside but the staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing, we went for set lunch menu. The portions are small but perfect for lunch and we didn't even go for dessert. My husband loved the raspberry petit fois... More

We had stayed at The Cottage in the Wood a few years ago and had a wonderful stay so I was hoping that when I booked a four night stay for last week that we would not be disappointed - we certainly were not disappointed as the Cottage in the Wood was even better than I remembered! This was our third visit to this hotel. Small and friendly the service is excellent. Its very relaxing and charming . A great deal of effort has gone into decorating and maintaining the individual bedrooms and the garden room on this occasion was superb. So why disappointed? It was the food. It was very good quality and served nicely but... More
