We spent three nights at this delightful country hotel near Bassenthwaite. It is exactly as it sets out to be. The staff superb: the owners helpful, informed, interesting and interested. The front of house team is brilliant: friendly without being intrusive and you feel that you are guests, rather than customers in their home. The food is all that was... More

We recently spent three nights there with friends. The accomodation was excellent, although our room was on the small side. However the food was excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

After all the amazing reviews we were left a tad disappointed. We had booked to stay for 3 nights with some friends. Our rooms were okay, clean but small. Breakfast was delicious, we only dined one night and that was disappointing, one fish dish not cooked through properly so one of us was left watching the others enjoy their meal... More

Great stay for one night. Restaurant and food is first class (probably one of the best restaurants we have ever been to). Very welcoming too. Room was small but perfectly adaquate and actually the bed was very comfortable. Staff were very pleasant and helpful as were the owners. It is situated in woodland and there is a visitors center with... More

Just spent a night that was a memorable experience from start to finish as an Anniversary treat. On arrival Kath greeted us with a warm welcome, we were offered complimentary coffee and home-made carrot cake. Our room (Ash) was tastefully decorated with a whirlpool bath. Our meal was excellent, we had the taster menu which I would highly recommend, we... More

A truly memorable dining experience. The food was excellent and was back up by faultless service. We felt looked after from start to finish and I haven't a single complaint. The only sticking point for anyone looking at dining here will be the price. It cost me £160 for a set menu for 2, a bottle of wine and some... More

We booked the Mountain View room (Oak) with stunning views of the surrounding forest and Mount Skiddaw. Even on a wet day with the mountain partially obscured by mist the view was mesmerising. The room which contained a comfortable king size bed was tastefully furnished and extremely cosy. The only negative comment I have concerned the bathroom which an estate... More

My wife and I stayed two nights in the garden room which was most enjoyable. The overall quality of this establishment is very good. The staff could not have tried harder to please and our dining experience was memorable, we will return to this delightfully located establishment..

By chance we found The Cottage in the Wood whilst mountain biking in Whinlatter Forest, and what a find indeed! Although a little way out of Braithwaite on the Whinlatter Pass, the restaurant and hotel are in an idyllic spot surrounded by the peace and quiet of the forest. We were welcomed into the lounge on arrival where we were... More

Have just returned from a truly exceptional anniversary treat at Cottage in the Wood. As near enough locals we had been recommended this place many times and thankfully have finally gotten round to paying them a visit. Kath and the team make your visit extra special, they are so attentive without being overbearing. We stayed in the tree tops room... More
