We originally booked one night at Portobello Motel but loved it so much we spent another 3 nights there and 'commuted' into Dunedin each day. We didn't mind the 20-25 min drive each way, knowing we could return to a peaceful and comfortable retreat at night. Sue and Keith made us feel very welcome and were a delight to chat... More

We had a lovely two night stay here and the motel is well positioned in Portobello overlooking the harbour. Some awesome scenery and wildlife nearby. If you can, take a walk round Sandymount reserve. Allan's Beach is worth seeing too. If Sue recommends a wildlife tour take that as well. Two nights wasn't really enough. The units were well appointed... More

Located on the mountain, the room in portobello is clean and well-ordered. The one we stay at was upgraded by Sue the owner. Cooking facility is good enough, laundry is good, but for those who wants to cook fish this motel might not be an option since it's prohibited. Sue and Keith are so kind and helpful in everything, like... More

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We're very pleased you enjoyed yourselves here. As you have mentioned, we have had to ask guests not to cook fish as we find this leaves a lingering smell which is very difficult to get rid of and unpleasant for incoming guests. Also, the kitchenettes are only intended for preparing very... We are from the North Island on one of our frequent South Island tours and booked unit 2 on the basis of very good trip advisor reviews of the motel. We weren't disappointed as we had a very pleasant outlook even though the weather was very cold and windy. The unit had adequate heating and the bed was very comfortable... More

Thank you for taking the time to write a comprehensive review. We are, of course, very pleased that the Studio was to your liking and it met your expectations. It's very good to hear. Every low season we carry out maintenance and renewals in order to keep the motel up to date and fresh. This year we are redecorating and re... More

Arrived in atrocious weather, greeted by friendly staff. Unit was small but comfortable and had everything we required, not to mention a fantastic view. Very clean, warm and comfortable, modern appliances and new furnishings all in good order. Owners were extremely friendly and helpful, as were other staff we spoke to. Portobello and the Otago Peninsula are truly beautiful, tranquil... More

We spent one night here on our way South. The staff were so friendly and helpful, taking the time to chat about local places and giving tips for the best ways to see the local wildlife. The unit was clean, modern and perfect for our family. We highly recommend Portobello Motels as a lovely motel with outstanding views. Thank you,... More

Our family of eight (6 adults, 2 children ages 5 & 3) stayed 1 night in 2 units - 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom cottages which are side by side. The cottages are clean, and comfortable, with adequate heating to keep us warm. Sue was very friendly even via emails. I must say out of all our accommodation during our... More

The Otago Peninsula is beautiful, and the Portobello Motel is right in the middle of it. It's got penguins, sea lions, beaches, and hikes--and it's still an easy drive to Dunedin. You're in walking distance near multiple restaurants, and there's a kitchen in the motel that you can use to make simple meals. It's a nice play to stay, and... More

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. It's always nice to know our guests have really enjoyed our beautiful Peninsula and been able to see the wildlife. We're very sorry to hear that you didn't find the beds comfortable though. We have had very few issues with sleep comfort but will now monitor it more closely and... More

We stayed for 2 nights in early April. The wildlife in Otago Peninsula is our target. The Portobello Motel is very convenient for wildlife viewing. It is well equipped and managed. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Besides providing us the first hand information of the area, she also helped to book the wildlife tour which we enjoyed very... More

Thank you for your review. We're very pleased you enjoyed your stay and, despite the weather, saw plenty of wild life. We appreciate your comments about seafood and are grateful you respected our request not to cook fish. We are considering building an outdoor BBQ area which will need to be tastefully designed as well as sheltered. Many thanks for... More

About half the complex is situated in such a way as to provide no views of the lovely Portobello Bay. Rooms are comfortable, and have most things needed for an overnight stay. There is a microwave and a portable 2 ring cook top. But there are heavy penalties for leaving any cooking smells. Limited free wifi, and good quality local... More

Thank you for your comments and for taking the time to write. As you say, only the Studios have the direct view across the Bay but all the other rooms have a rural outlook to the hills all around us, beyond the motel buildings. We have been obliged to ask guests to refrain from cooking odorous foods as it makes... More
