Helgoland is Germany's only off shore island. It's a bit difficult to reach (as you might expect) but the 3 hour ferry journey is worthy. The solitary 58m red sandstone rock offers unforgettable views and just off the island you’ll find the “Bathing Dune” with its extended beaches where you can swim protected from the tides.
We stayed in Helgoland's Youth Hostel, which is a 10 min. walk from the village and is located in a beautiful beach.
Rooms are basic but comfortable, with bunkbeds and central heating. We shared toilets and shower rooms, which were perfectely clean.
Breakfast is included and generous and is served in a dining room with stunning views of the sea and cliffs. Hartmut, the director, was warm and friendly.
Nearby there is a facility with climatized swimming pools, sauna and jacuzzi that shouldn't be missed.
