Stunning period style hotel, apparently 400 years old which still retains some of its quaint period features. Staff very friendly and helpful. We had a large room that overlooked the street. Other reviewers said it was noisy, although we stayed on a Sunday night and found it extremely peaceful. A short 5 minute walk and you are right in the... More

We booked this hotel for one night at the very last minute when we had to change our plans, and we were very pleasantly surprised. The Auberge du Bon Fermier has been an Inn since the 1500s and retains all its historic charm (including cobbled floors and narrow stairs), while having been renovated to a very high standard. Our room... More

We were looking for a stopover on our way south and Valenciennes seemed as good a spot as any and the Auberge Du Bon Fermier looked intriguing being a period building. The accommodation was a good size and the building certainly had character but because it is a period building you do not get bags of luxury not that we... More

Visited for Easter 2014, and found the hotel exceeded expectations. Family run premises and that comes through from every member of staff. Very atttentive and always willing to help/offer advice. The room was very nicely decorated and large in size. Beautiful separate bathroom and very comfortable bed. But the highlight of the trip had to be the restaurant and the... More

After reading reviews I had high hopes for this place. The building itself is lovely and somewhat of an oasis in Valenciennes and the restaurant is in a great room with a lovely atmosphere. Our bedroom was adequate but poorly decorated and needed a general make over. The food was at best average, it reminded me of school dinners which... More

having travelled extensively in France over the last 40 years the selection and quality of the food must rank amongst the best food we have had anywhere in France. The staff were all very helpfull and nothing appeared too much trouble. The hotel has reserved spaces in secure car park just over the road. The 17th century building is quite superb, the dining room... We booked here for last June, but have waited to review until now for two reasons. Firstly we wanted to write when we were not so angry, and secondly we had hoped that the owner may have contacted us as was promised by the night staff. The decor and cleanliness of this place cannot be faulted. However, we booked two... More

When several of our approved "corporate" hotels were unable to accommodate me in Valenciennes, I decided to give Auberge du Bon Fermier a try. I had eaten at their restaurant (which is among the best in the region), and loved the feeling of being transported back in time. The property once served as an inn, a place where stage coaches... The Auberge du Bon Fermier is a very small hotel, so you are treated as a person (we asked for advice about where to buy cheese, and a special phone call was made to find the name of a local farmer.) The rooms are large and very comfortable, with wonderful wooden ceilings and the original windows and fireplaces. The restaurant... More

I have been staying at this hotel for over 30 years and it is still the best in the area, every room has its own appeal, staff and owner are all very freindly, and the food is of a very high standard. Food is not cheap but you get what you pay for and it is worth a go. Also... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Comfortably established after four hundred years of existence. All spruced up, it offers its Henry IV style, interpreted with regional inspiration in its proportions, harmoniously decorated in total respect for the region and its history. When Louis XIV made his “joyful return” to Valenciennes in August 1680, the Auberge was called “A la Ville de Troyes”. A souvenir of the great fairs of Champagne, with the travellers, salesmen and drapers stopping in our town to rest and restore their strength.in the hearth, there would be capons and haunches of meat roasting with a stew bubbling in fat jugs, swaying with the bawdy songs which barely covered the sounds of horses and their hooves on the round paving stones in the courtyard. The inn had a great reputation; Jacques Fontaine managed the establishment until 1701 and its successors’ were still roasting in the fireplace in 1789. ... more   less
