Rooms comfortable, great groupon with free bottle of processco, lovely. So chilled before heading to the bar, for a lovely wild boar burger and yummy sweet potato fries. Great they set up table for breakfast in bar so with could eat with our dog, who loved the moorland and area around, and enjoyed seeing all the hunt dogs in the... More

Loved everything. The staff were very friendly, the room was immaculate with all the trimmings, including the Prosecco. The bar had a roaring fire, with lovely background music. There was a pool table. We were the only two in the restaurant but it did not feel lonely the atmosphere in the whole of the place is lovely. The dinner was... More

Very pleasant stay. Thank you. Friendly and welcoming staff. Very good evening meal, especially the ribeye steak which really hit the spot:) We really enjoyed our weekend break, including our Lurcher Dexter, who didn't want to leave. Excellent value, highly recommended. We will stay there again when in the area.

Lovely weekend away, we stayed saturday night, staff very friendly especially Frankie, nothing too much trouble, lovely room warm, good shower, hairdrier in room. Lovely views over fields, watched the rabbits running around early morning. Food was great had lambs liver and cumberland sausage, no complaints, breakfast was equally good. No noise at night time

My husband and I stopped in for a light lunch on the way back from the lake district a few weeks ago and decided to take a different route via Alston instead of the main road. It was a lovely stop to break up our journey! There was a lovely young girl behind the bar called Joanna who was very... More

We stayed on a groupon 2 night deal, with breakfast both days included. This was excellent value, especially with the chilled bottle of prosecco waiting for us in our room! The atmosphere in the pub was lovely and cosy around the real fire and the staff were welcoming and friendly. The room was well presented and clean with one of... More

My wife and I stayed at the Elks Head to visit the Roman sites in the surrounding area. Though the location of the pub is amazing per se, when put in relation to our visit it did not meet our expectations at all. Google maps depicted the place in a more conveniently located and close to both Vindolanda and the... More

We didn't stay here but just saw it on our travels, when we were getting hungry. Very glad we did! Very nice bar meals, freshly prepared and reasonably priced. The setting is cosy complete with open fire. So much nicer than a chain pub with pre-prepared food.

Lovely homely and friendly pub. Enjoyed the local community spirit. Cosy log fire, great value food and accommodation, would like to return. Our 3 day break was not enough to see and do everything we would like after having a taster before Christmas. Met up with friends who had a 2 night stay. Weather was VERY wet but it didn;t... More

My wife and I stayed at the Elks Head as a prelude to a days shooting on the Whitfield estate. The staff were kind and helpfull and nothing was too much trouble. The evening meal was worthy of a much more spectacular venue and was simply excellent and breakfast was wholesome and tasty. All in all it was a wonderful... More
