We loved staying at Il Portone, and selected it based on the good reviews on TripAdvisor. Our correspondence with Luciana was efficient and friendly. So, when we arrived, she greeted us by name, not just as travelers. The setting is the former farm and lands in her husband’s family - tastefully renovated: simple and characteristic. Each guest apartment is set... More

Wonderful hosts, and magical environ. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we could not rent a car so we arrived by public transport. The hosts picked us up at the bus depot, no charge to us! They were wonderful and friendly, despite not having the best English. The room was big, with a small patio in front of the door. Great place... More

Il Portone is located just within the Etruscan gate Porta Diana, offering a nice view of an active farm/olive grove and nearby city hills. It is difficult to find and is a good 1.5 km from the Porta Fiorentine into town. I certainly could not climb the steep hill up in ten minutes; twenty strenuous minutes would be more like... More

Had one night (sadly) in Volterra at the start of our holiday. Il Portone was a great base. Admittedly ten mins walk uphill to get into the town but the facilities are brilliant. We had a small apartment with separate kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Shame we were only acing the one nigh as we din really make the most of... More

This is a beautiful little place located at a truly picturesque spot. Enchanting atmosphere is guaranteed by the staff and the bulding itself. Very clean and the staff is also very nice and helpful. It is not far from the cuty centre and the view from iur rooms were simly amazing. But what we liked the most is the enchantin... More

Our large apartment was filled with character and comfort, except for the fact that the heating was inadequate for the cold weather. Would be great in summer with large windows offering beautiful country views. Fantastic grounds and friendly cats. The charming town of Volterra was a short walk away. Highly recommended.

The Rough Guide is rather disparaging about Volterra. It is wrong. Free of crowds and wrapped in ancient charm, it is the perfect base for reaching out in all directions in search of the "real" Tuscany. How better to start than by staying at Il Portone, named after the hulking Etruscan gate around which one turns to enter the green... More

We found this Residence very comfortable and convenient for visiting the beautiful city of Volterra. We resided in one of the smaller apart but space was plenty for a couple. The garden is lovely and they let us use it to cook a wonderful dinner for us and friends who had come to visit.
