I stayed at Hotel California for seven days in mid October. Though I had requested a room on an upper floor when booking, I was told there were none available upon check in and given a room on the ground floor. The hotel is on the main road through Positano, about halfway up the hillside, so our two adjoining rooms had spectacular and constantly changing views of the bay and much of the town below. The staff, especially Maria who runs the hotel, were brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble. Advice and assistance was freely available and always accurate and reliable.... more

You won't want to. She's the perfect combination of owner / concierge / mother and lovably pushy Italian matriarch. Her command of English and Italian is wonderful and she always is very helpful, sometimes too much.
