The setting is stunning so it's worth going for a pint just to enjoy the views. But the food is excellent- a much higher standard than the low key traditional country pub image would suggest. I had venison, my husband had lamb. Both delicious. Followed it up with bakewell pudding and custard- ultimate comfort food. Good value too - £60... More

I didn't stay here, me and my boyfriend were staying in a cottage over the road and we popped in one night for a drink, then came back for a meal a couple of nights later. The food was lovely and the service was quick and friendly. We booked our table the night before and sat by the fireplace with... More

We've been coming to this pub from time to time for years. It's 50 miles from home, but its location and ambience are stunning. In the past the staff have been off hand. This seems to have changed. The maitre d' went out of her way to be helpful and friendly and the other staff followed suit. And the food... More

We had eaten at this pub before on several occasions and had enjoyed the food and thought the location was terrific. So when we needed an overnight stay in Derbyshire, we thought the Barrel would fit the bill. How wrong we were! The pub has the most spectacular views and we thought our room might share these. Instead we were... More

I always go to The Barrel when visiting the area, splendid views on a clear day (apparently it's the highest pub in Derbyshire), and inside there's a fire burning and a wonderfully quaint old atmosphere. The beers kept there are never less than excellent and the food is outstanding. Very friendly and professional service too. Would never miss it -... More

Visited with family at the beginning of the month on a Sunday, when I rang up to book I was told it would be busy so given a slightly earlier time. This suited us fine. The pub itself is beautiful and exactly what you picture when you think of an old countryside inn. However we arrived and were greeted by... More

Walked to the Inn last week after the heavy snow. Booked for 1.15pm for a meal. Due to the bad walking conditions we arrived after 2.15pm when food orders finished! No problem gents, you can have any type of sandwich with side salad and a bowl of chips each. Sat us on table by a big fire, produced us a... More

It ticks all the boxes for location, welcome and value for money. Lovely bar area, lots of wines by the glass, toasty fires and yummy food. Nothing fancy just does what it says on the box. Spotlessly clean everywhere. Only criticism was the bathroom which could have done with a shelf and was freezing cold. But that's being picky -... More
